As I look back over the last year, I am filled with so much gratitude. I am grateful for a year of good health, a job that I love, and the amazing friends and family that fill my life with joy.

After spending a week in Portland, Oregon with the Center for Diversity & the Environment (CDE), I realized that I have so much more to be thankful for. I've never had to worry about access to clean drinking water, being able to find fresh affordable food to eat, or that the very air I breathe is poisoning me. While we often think of these concerns being a world away, the truth is that here in the United States, poor communities and communities of color bear untold environmental burdens that threaten the health of children and their families each day.

While this reality is sobering, I am proud to be partnering with an organization that is fighting to ensure that all people have access to safe water, fresh food, and clear air. I've traveled North Carolina (from Dare to Cherokee) and supported communities as they fight for these things that so many of us take for granted. One of the most valuable resources that I have encountered thus far is the Center for Diversity and the Environment. With CDE's support I'm helping to increase access to clean water in North Carolina communities, supporting African-American farmers in maintaining their farmland, and helping communities build the capacity to design a better future.

While I would usually celebrate my birthday at a club or restaurant, this year I've got different plans. I'm inviting you to help me raise $300 for the Center for Diversity & the Environment. CDE works with communities and environmental organizations to ensure that those who are most affected by environmental problems are at the table as leaders to develop solutions.

Today, kicks off my fundraising challenge. I hope to raise $300 by Tuesday, January 22nd. Please help me by making a donation of $15 or more.

All the best,
Melanie Allen
