Hello friends, this is Grace! For the past couple of months, I have been living and teaching in Jogjakarta, Indonesia through an amazing organization called Volunteers in Asia (VIA). Volunteers in Asia is a non-profit that sends American volunteers to Asian countries such as Indonesia, China, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam to work at local NGOs (Non-governmental organizations) and local schools. Volunteers work directly with local communities on projects that positively impact the people and the region. I work at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), a top-notch Indonesian university in Jogjakarta, Central Java. For the past couple of months, I have been working with rural villagers in Kinahrejo who were affected by the terrible 2010 Merapi volacano eruption. I have worked with them weekly in their village to improve their English which they use often to run their jeep and motorcycle tours around the volcano area (tourism is their main source of income). I also guest lecture to students at UGM and other schools in and around Jogjakarta. I am thrilled to work with these intelligent students and friendly local communities. How many people can say that they've had these sorts of in-the-field, cross-cultural experiences? It is through VIA that I have had all of these amazing opportunities.
I am truly proud to be apart of such a great organization. VIA creates a small, close-knit community between the host country posts, the current volunteers, staff, and volunteer alumni. What I value about VIA is the mutual respect that both the local Asian posts and VIA have for each other. VIA listens closely to volunteers' on the ground experiences and to the needs and wants of the in-country post and the community. Through our posts, VIA makes it possible to create positive change for students and locals in a respectful and culturally appropriate way. For all of these reasons, I think it is important to keep VIA strong so they are able to continue their great work in Asia. I invite you to support Volunteers in Asia through whatever amount you could give. Plus, VIA is celebrating its 50th birthday this year, so you could consider your donation as a birthday gift!
Your contribution will go to two different VIA funds, both of which will help us continue our work in major ways.
The first fund is the VIA scholarship fund. VIA gives scholarships to incoming volunteers who need financial assistance in order to work abroad. I personally benefitted from this fund as I received a scholarship to travel to Indonesia. For me, it is important to donate to ensure that future volunteers have a chance to travel and have these cross-cultural interactions that I have had too.
The second fund is the Community Project Fund, which will support future volunteers' projects in their posts. There are many volunteers who have great ideas for projects that can benefit their communities or students, but they need a bit of money in order to get these projects off the ground. Your contribution will help various volunteers make a tangible difference in the lives of students and locals in Asian countries.
Thank you so much for your time, and I hope you contribute to this amazing organization which has positively impacted my life and the lives of so many people!
