We hope this request finds you and all those you care about safe and well and looking forward to a happy and healthy 2013. Please read on and give what you can.
2012 has been a difficult year for many of our friends, but if you've followed our progress over the last year, you know that Young Playwrights Inc. understands devastation and recovery. On November 20, 2011, we entered what was left of Young Playwrights Inc. headquarters. An electrical fire had destroyed our home. The stench of the charred ruins was intense. We thought we had lost everything.
Fast forward to October 16, 2012, the 31st anniversary of our founding, the kickoff of the 2012-13 Advanced Playwriting Workshop, and the reopening of our space at 431 Fifth Avenue – the artistic and administrative home of the only professional theater in the United States for playwrights aged 18 and under – including a new studio that can be used for rehearsals, classes, and small presentations. We were joined by nearly 100 members of our extended family who came to remind us how important Young Playwrights Inc. is to them, and the joyful energy of that day was palpable and exhilarating. And while completion of our vision for this space will likely take another year, we are proud to have survived the last year without missing a step in our programming.
In our year without a home, we still read and evaluated hundreds of plays from writers from across the country. Eight of those writers will join us in New York for the Young Playwrights Conference (and the Off Broadway readings of their works at the Lucille Lortel Theatre) January 9- 17, 2013. We still facilitated playwriting workshops in schools across the state and beyond and held our intensive Advanced Playwriting Workshop and Urban Retreat here at home. We still completed a long-awaited revision of our curriculum for teaching playwriting and brought a new intensity to our professional development programs. And in our spare time, we developed a strategic plan with the support of Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Kennedy Center, installed a new Board President – the wonderfully talented and committed David Henry Hwang – and assembled a whole lot of IKEA furniture.
Now, as we get settled in this space, plays are beginning to arrive for the January 2nd national deadline. We look forward to the Write a Play! NYC playwriting competition, to the presentation of new plays from our Advanced Playwriting Workshop, and to a proper celebration of 30-something years of young playwrights changing the landscape of the American theater.
Young Playwrights Inc. is a safe haven and creative sanctuary for thousands of young people and the generosity of our friends has been critical to its success and survival. If you have already given this year, we thank you -- and if you haven't , we ask that you take the last action of 2012 (or the first of 2013!) and make a donation to help cover the last of our reopening expenses and launching some great soon-to-be-announced new projects. Please know how important you are to us -- we don't take your support or this amazing new roof over our heads for granted.
With sincere appreciation and with great anticipation for 2013,
Young Playwrights Inc.
