As our nation grieves the loss of so many innocent lives, we realize mental illness can be prevented and recognize that our own community needs to be more proactive in preventing unnecessary tragedies.
As teachers, we are in the classrooms every day with all of these children. We see little minds that struggle in their heads sometimes. We want to help these little minds, but we were trained to teach academics. We need more training with mental health issues to better help identify symptoms, respond to side effects, communicate to parents, and make appropriate instructional decisions. We want to have a better system to help students that act out to keep everyone safe.
As educators, we are not immune from the wielding fist of an angry student, nor from the tears of a child that says he/she wants to die. We love our students, and we want to help, but we cannot do it alone.
We encourage our Department of Education and legislators to unite with educators, parents and mental health professionals to start to look at the problem. As with everything we do in education, it would be advantageous to begin data collection to identify the scope of the problem. We recognize there are not good and simple answers to this incredibly complex issue, but what we are doing now is not working.
Mental illnesses are treatable, but we have to have increased access to mental health supports. We have limited resources for crisis situations and programs available to our children.
Train us, teach us, support us, give us resources. We want to help and see our children happy and healthy. And the time is now.
