Democrats in the US House of Representatives

We insist that you declare your support for legislation banning assault weapons and high-capacity ammo magazines. These kinds of weapons are made explicitly to kill as many people as possible as fast as possible, and there is no credible reason why any civilian needs one.

Since the tragic deaths of so many young people at Sandy Hook Elementary School, the nation has been asking itself what could have been done differently. Here's the most obvious failing: why could a troubled young man so easily obtain high-capacity handguns and a semi-automatic rifle? Those weapons allowed him to shoot many children and their would-be protectors quickly and fatally.

The kinds of firearms being sold are far beyond what any citizen needs under his/her Second Amendment rights. Stand up to the gun industry and their NRA lobbyists, and push for meaningful reform. The serial tragedies of gun violence in the last year compel it.

Signed,

Emily Bookstein

The shooting deaths of 20 young children and 6 teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School remind us that legislators have been too afraid of the gun industry to prevent sales of semiautomatic, assault, and high-capacity weapons. But now, hundreds of thousands of people are clamoring for improved national gun control. We demand that Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives declare their support for a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammo magazines. There's no reason that U.S. citizens need access to such powerful and devastating firearms

At the moment, the United States has the loosest gun control laws of any developed country. Is it a surprise that the large majority of murders here are caused by firearms? Just compare 8,775 gun-related deaths in the US in 2010 to only 18 in the UK. (1)

Still, the gun industry and their NRA lobbyists have stalled gun control reform for years by paying off lawmakers and rejecting new bans and regulations, even on military-grade weapons.

By signing, you tell the House Democrats that you want them to stand up to the gun lobby and ban high-capacity magazines and assault weapons! Don't let Sandy Hook Elementary School fade away into yet another tragedy we wish we could have avoided.
