What will the petition say?
1975 was the pivotal year in the Vietnam War. In early April 1975, U.S. President Gerald Ford, a WWII Vet, in a profound humanitarian act, backed by two million dollars in Congressional funding, announced Operation Babylift (OBL) that would authorize the evacuation of several thousand orphans from Vietnam on a series of 30 planned flights. Operation Babylift saved approximately 4,000 Vietnamese children to freedom in America and all over the world by the end of April 1975.

On April 5th, 1975, President Ford went an extra step in showing his care to all the babylift orphans by arranging an Air Force One flight to San Francisco International Airport to greet the babies upon arrival. He actually carried two babies off the plane himself, one being Nikki Logan who eventually grew up and joined the Marine Corps!
In the meantime, the first scheduled flight of a C-5A Galaxy cargo plane, crashed into a rice paddy shortly after taking off from Tan Son Nhut airport. Of the 330 passengers, 154 children and volunteers perished. For the survivors of this tragedy, the babies being rescued, the OBL community historians, etc,… refer to this date as being their second birthday.

Signed,

Operation Babylift, authorized by President Ford, is one of the greatest humanitarian efforts of the 20th Century. July 14th, 2013 marks President Ford's Centennial Birthday. As a nation, we should take pride in honoring our President for his audacious and courageous actions in saving the lives of 4,000 babies, especially within his Centennial year 2013. These babies were adopted by caring and loving families all over the world. April 5th signifies the beginning date of the OBL community which includes the greatest number of living survivors around the world. Please help make April 5th President Ford National Recognition Day. Act now and sign this petition!
