The horseback riding on the beach in Ocean Shores Washington is huge business, tourists enjoy a stroll on the beach all summer long. The horses pay the ultimate price in the dollar and revenue this creates for the city, as well as the owner of the string.
According to contracts signed in the past, hours for string operation went from 8 hours to 10 hours behind closed doors. It went by virtually un noticed, except by those who care about the future of these animals.
The city council has been approached by many who have raised concerns, and were ignored. We are not asking them to cease operations, we are asking the city that they go back to an 8 hour schedule which is more humane and whats right for the horses on the beach.
It is a proven fact that horses need rest, and grazing to maintain health, if a horse is kept on the beach for 10 hours, add a minimum of 2 hours to that for transport, and then a couple hours for unloading and feeding, these horses are not recieving the basic care and rest they need, they cannot maintain a healthy body to continue, if they are not allowed the proper rest.
We are asking that when the City signs new contracts with the owners of the horses, that they go back to limiting the horses being on the beach for only 8 hours. This is still plenty of time for the business to be profitable, as well as gives the horses a chance to rest.
We are also concerned about the low limits of vet care the city requires for these contracts. A blanket vet inspection should not be allowed as it has been in the past. Each horse has its own issues, and therefore each horse being used on te beach should be vaccinated and have its own individual vet inspection for the owners to place it on the beach for rental riding. In the past a one page letter from a vet has been accepted from the owners. We believe for not only the horses but as a matter of public safety, each horse being used on the beach should have a personal vet inspection, proof of current vaccinations, and those records should be filed with the city for public viewing upon request.
Please sign our petition and give the message to the "good ol'" boy city council, that animal cruelty will not be tolerated, these animals deserve proper rest, proper grazing and proper vet care. Send the message that we as human counterparts, using these horses for enjoyment will not tolerate any thing less!

Tell the city council we want change to the contracts being signed by horse string owners and to create riding that is not cruel and unfair to the working horses on the beach. Demand that horse only be kept on the beach 8 hours max, and that all horses recieve an individual vet check.
