We the undersigned request that Marathon County municipalities implement - Mary's Law - named after the 4-year-old shepherd/Labrador mix that was allegedly poisoned/ tortured over many months and then ultimately stabbed to death by her owner’s girlfriend - SEAN D JANAS- in June 2012. No - Humane officers have worked in Marathon County since the Marathon County Humane Society in August ended its contracts to provide animal control services to municipalities, citing cost concerns.
Currently, the Sheriff’s Department dispatch center gets about 2,000 animal complaints every year, and many go without a response if deputies are busy on other law enforcement calls.
We urge all Marathon Counties to raise their pet licensing fees to $10 per spayed or neutered animal and $20 per unaltered animal for 2013. Municipal leaders are also asked to formulate a plan for reminding people to pay their annual pet license fees in spring 2013, and to contact the Animal Control task force to indicate whether their municipality will participate in the countywide humane officer program.
Mary's Law is tentatively set to begin July 1st 2013.
Humane officers will fill a need for services that police departments generally are too busy and not properly equipped to handle.
We do not want another innocent animal - like Mary- to suffer due to lack of available services.

The Marathon County Animal Control Task Force is recommending the county move forward with a plan to hire three humane officers after the torture death of a dog called Mary in Wausau Wisconsin in June 2012 which has provoked widespread outrage. SEAN D JANAS faces court in December 2012 over her killing.
Currently, the Sheriff's Department dispatch center gets about 2,000 animal complaints every year, and many go without a response if deputies are busy on other law enforcement calls.
WE DO NOT WANT TO SEE ANOTHER ANIMAL GO THROUGH WHAT MARY DID.
