Thank you, City of Philadelphia!
In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, the Animal Care and Control Team of Philadelphia's city animal shelter lost power for five days. With as many as 600 animals housed at the facility on its busiest days, this could have been a tragedy for the community. But tragedy was averted in Philadelphia thanks to advance planning by the city.
Because the City of Philadelphia considered both people and their pets in emergency planning, the animal shelter was included in the list of crucial services during disasters. As a part of disaster preparedness, in 2007 the city installed large generators at critical facilities across the city. A massive generator, capable of keeping the power on in an emergency situation for several days was installed in front of the ACCT Philly animal shelter facility at that time.
For five days staff was able to assist residents and their pets, operating as normal, entirely on generator power,
On behalf of those who care about both people and their pets we THANK the City of Philadelphia for their commitment to the community, its people and their animals!
