AC&C Acting Director Risa Weinstock & Board Chair Dr. Farley

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, we need to protect ALL of our citizens. We are asking that Acting Director Risa Weinstock of New York City’s Animal Care and Control and her staff halt the At-Risk / To Be Destroyed lists, unless in the case of an absolute emergency, until New York City has moved closer to a full recovery. We hope that the shelter system in New York City will finally move to no-kill in the near future, but until we can make this permanent change there should be no victims of Hurricane Sandy losing their lives with NYC’s tax dollars.

The AC & C’s shelter system is broken, and we are hoping that idea that a loving pet like Lucas (http://www.examiner.com/article/new-york-dog-on-death-row-following-death-of-owner-hurricane-sandy) whose owner died during Hurricane Sandy, would not be punished in the same way. Lucas stood by the side of his owner until he was discovered and sadly, he was dropped off to the NYCACC by police officers probably thinking he was doing a good thing. Little did they know that in mere days the NYCACC would put him on the dreaded list because he’s SCARED!

So many of the animals within the NYC shelters were either lost during the hurricane and others are part of families that lost everything. We cannot hold these animals accountable for our actions. We ask that while resources might be scarce we protect the voiceless at this time and do whatever we can to protect as many homeless NYC Animals in the wake of this disaster. There is certainly enough space to save and protect these innocent animals.

Please share our cause and let’s get the protection these animals deserve!

Thanks,
Concerned Citizens of New York City

Signed,

Danielle Johnsen Karr

There is no reason for any further tragedies to come out of Hurricane Sandy.
So much of New York City and its surrounding areas haven't had a chance to fully recover from Sandy, and New York City's Animal Care and Control is expecting animals who might have been lost or surrendered to be rescued within days. NYC residents are just getting power in some areas, while trying to rebuild in others -- don't let their animals be taken away too. This lack of emergency response from our city shelter system is an indicator of what's wrong and what NEEDS to be fixed immediately.

Please help us stand up for the voiceless. Ask your friends and family to support this cause.
