Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) represent the fields in which the U.S. continues slip in their ranking worldwide. These fields are crucial for the U.S. to remain competitive in an increasingly global market, and strong capability in both science and technology is a necessary component of the nation's security both domestic and abroad.

Students in these fields earn more money than non-STEM graduates, while spurring innovation with very stable job security. STEM fields are one of the few areas where there is job growth in the U.S.: According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the science, technology, engineering and mathematics—known as STEM—fields are expected to add 2.7 million new jobs by 2018,1 yet women, minorities, and the economically disadvantaged are vastly underrepresented in those fields.

MESA Engineering Program (MEP) at San Francisco State University helps thousands of educationally disadvantaged students become scientists, engineers and mathematicians, filling an urgent need for qualified technical professionals in the United States.

Throughout their studies, participating students receive academic support and personal counseling to keep them on track toward their degrees. Professional alumni mentor students who are entering the job market with the skill and confidence they need to succeed.
