As you are well aware, there has been a massive increase in the number of suicides taking place in Goa over the past few years. The graph demonstrating the suicide rate has been on a constant rise and this has become a very serious issue.

With recent cases such as the one where a 11 year old girl burnt herself due to low grades and a 13 year old killed himself due to change of class and separation from a friend, this has become a matter or major concern.

According to information gathered from the National Crime Records Bureau, Ministry of Home Affairs, the average suicide rate in Goa is 18.5, way above the National Average of 11.4. According to Dr. Casteilino, founder of COOJ Mental Health Foundation, Goa is 5th highest among smaller states in terms of suicide rate.

Suicides in Goa have been divided into 5 categories- Housewives, Students, Contractors and others, out of which suicides by students is the third highest. In fact, suicide has become the third highest cause of death, above malaria and AIDS.

Besides suicides, stress related problems and mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety disorder, mood swings, etc. are also on a high rise, particularly among the college and university students. According to Dr. Casteilino, fighting the stigma related to mental health issues and creating an understanding that it is absolutely normal to have such a problem is the major challenge.

Various studies have also shown that a high percentage of youth is turning towards alcoholism and drug abuse in the state over the past few years due to varied reasons such as peer pressure, quest for acceptance, stress, etc.

Clearly, all this goes to show that the youth are finding it difficult to cope up with the increasing academic as well as non academic pressure and emotional imbalance. The stigma attached to external professional help in this regard as seen in our society, makes it even worse.

Hence, in light of the above stated information and towards the betterment of student community and for student welfare, it is requested that the colleges across our State may kindly be asked to put in place a compulsory functional Counselling Center/cell with a certified counselor to look into the personal matters concerning student community and such that students get to visit the counselors privately with confidentiality of sessions.

It is requested, also, to put forth that seminars on stress management be held compulsorily atleast twice a month in the institutions.

We hope that the above measures will help reduce the problem to a great extent and they ultimately seize to be a part of our system.
