We the undersigned are fully supportive of the worthwhile aspects of the regeneration plans at the former HM Maze Prison Lisburn but believe that the decision of the Northern Ireland Office and of the First and Deputy First Minister to allocate EU Peace III funding finances to what is being described as a ‘Conflict Resolution Centre’ at the former HM Maze Prison, on or near the site of the former H-block cells and the former hospital wing is wrong and counter productive to process of fostering peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland.
We believe that allocation of EU finance to this proposal is wrong because it has the potential to be discriminatory and ‘can reasonably be considered offensive and divisive which could cause harm to reconciliation in Northern Ireland’. We respectfully request that the EU adheres to its stated standards and protocols and withdraws consent for the Conflict Resolution Centre expenditure and insists in the reallocation of the finances to genuine peace and reconciliation projects in Northern Ireland.

The former Maze prison site must be redeveloped but the IRAs H-Blocks and hospital wing do not need to be retained, lavishly restored and lauded as a tourist mecca at a cost of £18m. Such a proposal is a travesty of justice to all opposed to violence in Northern Ireland and would serve no propose other than to turn nondescript buildings into Irish republican hallowed ground and a ultimately a shrine for those who murdered and maimed. The Maze development must go ahead but the H-Blocks and associated buildings must be demolished.
