NOVEMBER 11 is VETERAN’S DAY! The Congress returned to work Sep. 10 and if you really want to make this a TRUE VETERANS DAY make our Government pay our disabled Veterans their earned retirement pay that has been offset by VA Disability Compensation since 1892! Yes, 1892! True, some restoration of concurrent receipt was made in 2003, 2004 and 2008, but there are still some 500,000 disabled veterans denied their full compensation because they are either (1) retired with less than 50% service connected disability or (2) were medically retired with less than 20 years of service.

Similarly, there are some 65,000 military widows who are denied their Survivors Benefits (SBP) purchased by their now deceased husbands from their military retirement pay. The reason for the denial is that because their husbands died from service connected causes, the VA awards DIC (dependents indemnification compensation) which similarly offsets the SBP. Believe me, many of these brave ladies are living in poverty.

Be sure to bring these issues to the table when you discuss with current elected officials and those running for office. Apparently Sen. Reid will be introducing an amendment to the 2013 National Defense Authorization Act to change the current MRP/VAD and SBP/DIC offsets when the Congress reconvenes. But nothing is assured. This travesty and denial has now lasted 120 years!

Why is it we can give $15 billion in foreign aid to Egypt and forgive $1 billion more in debt, yet we can not help our disabled veterans and our impoverished widows?

Signed,

Mikey Silbaugh
