For years hundreds of dolphins and whales washed up dead on beaches all over the world but the cause of their deaths was unknown...until now.
Since the end of “easy oil” the fossil fuel industries are driven ever deeper into offshore oil and gas deposits. The industry as a whole contributes a substantial amount of noise to the sea.
Second only to shipping noise in ubiquity is the noise of seismic airgun surveys. The surveys are conducted by trawling arrays of airguns behind a ship which explode every 10-15 seconds. The noise permeates the seafloor and the signal that reflects back is deciphered to portray the substrates below.
These surveys can often be heard thousands of miles from the source and are known to disrupt whales and fish in various ways, including killing them. But it is more likely that the common disruptions from airguns are harder to determine – such as degradation to hearing, habitat displacement, stress, and migratory disruptions.
The current global survey fleet includes close to 100 vessels, perhaps half of them working at any time around the world.
Another cause of these mass dolphin and whale deaths is the use of LFAS (Low Frequency Active Sonar) to search for submerged nuclear submarines during US Navy and NATO exercises
Several instances of these exercises and their deadly aftermath are listed here.

Whales and dolphins and other marine life use sound to migrate, feed, find a mate, and navigate. But the harmful levels of background noise that the US Navy, NATO, Shell Oil, and BP produce in the ocean could damage this web of sound critical to the survival of important marine life. So sign this petition and tell US Navy, and NATO to protect the ocean by limiting the use of LFAS during peacetime exercises in waters known to be inhabited by whales and dolphins. Tell Shell Oil and BP to limit the use of harmful airgun surveys in the critical whale and dolphin habitats in the Arctic and Antarctic.
