The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced recently that the State of Wyoming will entrust the State with managing wolf numbers, and endorses a plan that allows for wolves to be shot on sight. Wyoming will take over the “management” of the wolves the end of September, 2012. This is management? Killing a group of animals who came close to extinction and were protected by the government is not the answer. Now that the wolves have been delisted, states are falling like dominos to take care of their “situation” with wolves…kill them on sight! Unbelievably, Ashe is quoted as saying “it will support long term conservation of wolves as it has other predators like mountain lions, grizzly and black bears.”
It is not the humans’ place to decide what lives and what shall be killed. North America was once home to as many as 2 million gray wolves, but by the 1930’s, fur traders, bounty hunters, and even government agents poisoned, trapped and shot them to near extinction. Further, Governor Matt Mead said “the wolf population in Wyoming is recovered, and it’s appropriate that the responsibility for wolf management be returned to the state.” The wolves will be classified as predators, subject to being killed anytime by ANYONE! And, so starts extinction again. These legislators' have not even considered any other means to deal with their wolf population. Killing seems to be the only answer for them.
This situation is not the fault of the wolves. It’s the greedy cattlemen and ranchers, who encroach upon the wolves’ decreasing territory and don’t take any action and responsibility for the safekeeping of their animals. If the Alpha female wolf is killed, there is no animal to train her cubs what their source of food is. These legislators have taken the position that if you don’t understand something, then kill it. This is a barbaric attitude, and has shades of the old west philosophy. These people in control of the wolves’ destiny don’t take into account that wolves are afraid of humans and they are nothing like the wolves depicted in the terrible stories “Little Red Riding Hood” and the “Three Little Pigs.”
