How this will help

For several years, indigenous Q'eqchi communities around El Estor, Guatemala have struggled to protect their homes and livelihoods from the encroachment of a Canadian mining company, Hud Bay Minerals.

To make way for a nickel mine, the community of Lote Oche was violently evicted in 2007. During this eviction, 11 women report that they were gang raped by police, soldiers and security personnel hired by the mining company.

In 2009, Adolfo Ich Chamán, a school teacher and leader of community protests against the mine, was hacked and shot to death by a group of men identified as security personnel hired by the mining company.

On the same day, German Chub Choc, a young father, was shot at close range by a man identified as the head of security for the mining company. He was left paralized by the attack.

To date, no one has been brought to justice for any of these attacks.

The film, Defensora, "documents the Mayan Q'eqchi people's struggle to reclaim their ancestral lands, and find justice for the murder, shootings and rapes that have occurred in their communities." This film could be a powerful tool to shed light on the violence carried out against indigenous communities by foreign corporations, and maybe even help move forward the cases brought by the victims against Hud Bay Minerals in Canada.

But the films creators need our help raising the money they need to finish the film. Please pledge to watch the trailer, share it with others and, if your able, donate to support this project.
