Around the world, young people between the ages of 13 and 24 make up 40% of new HIV infections; in the United States alone, one in three new HIV infections will affect our country's youth. Despite these harsh realities, young people have a crucial role to play in the fight to end this pandemic once and for all.
We are proposing that on April 10th each year, young activists in high schools and universities across the country will promote HIV testing, fight stigmas, and begin the crucial dialogue around HIV & AIDS prevention. Most importantly, this day would allow young activists to hold our leaders accountable for their ongoing commitment to, and investment in, truly realizing an AIDS-free generation. We're not going to stand on the sidelines as this disease rips our communities apart, robs us of our loved ones, and puts our own futures at risk. We call on President Obama, Congress, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to officially recognize National Youth HIV & AIDS Awareness Day as an important step towards acknowledging and addressing the needs of our nation's youth. Join us by signing the petition calling on our leaders to shine the national spotlight on a courageous battle that young people nationwide are waging against HIV & AIDS.
