The Department of Forestry, Chinese Government

Once the majestic symbol of China, the giant panda has now become one of the world’s most threatened animals. As an animal that relies on bamboo for 99% of its diet, the clearing of bamboo forests for farming in the mountains of western China is driving the giant panda toward extinction.

With a population of over one billion people to provide land and resources for, the Chinese government has dragged its feet on creating a solution to the pressing issue of habitat loss.

As the department responsible for conservation efforts, we request that you take action now to secure the fate of the giant panda. We ask that you commit to the following:

- Increase the area of habitat under legal protection
- Build local capacities for nature reserve management
- Patrol against poaching and illegal logging
- Continued research and monitoring

Signed,

Mónica Salazar Ortiz

The giant panda is not only a treasure for China, but one for the world; now is the time to commit to creating nature reserves that will permanently protect giant panda habitats and save them from extinction.
