How this will help

The meat that you purchase could be linked to rainforest deforestation? In Brazil, rainforests are currently being burned and occupied illegally by cattle ranchers because it's cheap and profitable to raise cattle. Brazil has the largest commercial cattle herd in the world and has been the world’s largest beef exporter since 2003, exporting everywhere from Hong Kong, the European Union, and even to the United States (primarily fast food restaurants).*

Rainforests are often called the lungs of the planet for their role in absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen, which is necessary for the survival of all animals. Rainforests also help stabilize the climate, produce rainfall around the planet and provide habitat for plants and animals. Rainforests are critical to the ecological balance of the planet and need to be saved to ensure that our planet remains habitable.

Unfortunately, we are losing rainforests at an alarming rate. Between 2000 and 2007, 154,312 km2 of Brazilian Amazon forest was destroyed, an area larger than Greece. Cattle ranching is responsible for the majority of Amazon deforestation. Nearly 80 percent of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon results from cattle ranching.*

You can do your part to save rainforests by only buying sustainable local meat. Take the pledge today.
