Brian Dames, CEO, Eskom Enterprises

Mr. Dames,

Do not proceed with building the nuclear power plant at Thyspunt, near Jeffrey’s Bay. The local communities are strongly opposed to this plant as well as the global community at large.

Your plan to move thousands of tons of sand to clear way for the plant and dump it in the ocean will harm sea life by smothering the seabed. This unique heritage site will be severely damaged if the plant is built, as well as the squid industry, one of the area’s main sources of revenue.

For five generations nuclear energy has proved to be a dangerous and failing energy source. Given the amount of potential South Africa has for alternative energy such as wind and solar in this area, we urge you to shift your efforts away from nuclear and toward renewable energy sources that future generations can be proud of.

Signed,

Kyle Thiermann

How this will help

My friend recently asked me, “If you moved anywhere outside of the US, where would your favorite place be to relocate?”
I quickly replied, “Jeffrey’s Bay, South Africa.”

My friend recently asked me, “If you moved anywhere outside of the US, where would your favorite place be to relocate?”

My trip to Jeffrey’s Bay was the best of my life. I was there making the movie about the proposed nuclear plant for my series, Surfing For Change. It was incredible how much the community invited me in and supported me to make the movie. Small acts of kindness from locals allowed me to develop a special connection with J Bay: driving me around town to get the camera shots I needed for the movie; taking me surfing at some of the less-known waves; inviting me into their homes for delicious South African dishes.

Literally everyone I talked to while in J Bay was fiercely against the proposed nuclear plant so it was especially sad to see Eskom moving forward with such a dangerous project against the people’s will. I was, however, inspired to see so much of the community involved in stopping Eskom. They are organized and are effective in educating the community around the issue. I believe the next step is to involve the global community to this issue and make a statement worldwide that Jeffrey’s Bay and nuclear don’t mix.
