Luke Cole loved being a mentor. He believed that training the next generation of social justice lawyers was essential to the grassroots movement for environmental justice and healthy communities. From 1989 to 2009 Luke mentored countless individuals as the founder and executive director of the Center on Race, Poverty & the Environment (CRPE). To honor his legacy, the center has created the Luke Cole Memorial Fellowship.
This Fellowship enables young advocates to practice the key principles of environmental justice lawyering which Luke defined in his career:
1. Communities speak for themselves
2. Social change comes from the ground up
3. Lawyers should be on tap, not on top
We are now in the home stretch of reaching our fundraising goal for this year. We invite you to join the community supporting this living memorial.
A donation will provide a succession of Luke Cole Memorial Fellows the opportunity to take on national environmental justice cases in the style Luke pioneered - as community advocates.
