In March last year an anti-homosexuality legislation entitled 'The Bill to Prohibit and Control any form of Sexual Relations between Persons of the Same Sex, 2014' was introduced in parliament and now awaits debate and vote.
The introduction of this bill nevertheless signals the entry of potentially destructive anti-homosexual rhetoric into the Tanzanian political scene since there are no specific anti-discrimination laws to protect people on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity and there are no commitments that the government has made to ensure the existence of anti-discrimination law to benefit all Tanzanians.
LGBT people who make the decision to declare their sexual orientation face prejudice and discrimination from their family, friends, and also from wider society. The Homophobia is continuously causing extreme harm and disruption to people's lives, many LGBT people have become homeless as a result of being rejected by their families after revealing their sexual orientation. In Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Zanzibar and Mwanza between 20 and 40 percent of young people who live in ghettos are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender.
Every LGBT should have access to quality health services, quality education, equal employment, equality before the law, freedom of speech and respect.. With this belief, LGBT Voice Tanzania started the LGBT visibility project, a new project dedicated to prevent the passing of a new bill to suppress the rights of LGBT people in Tanzania
You can help raise the voice for LGBT in Tanzania by making a pledge to #LGBTinTanzaniaand inviting your friends.
