“I feel like I lost my innocence, my youth, my sense of invincibility that meant so much to me.”
“My non-cancer friends are well-meaning, but they don't understand and just say, ‘you look great.'”
-Statements from young adult cancer survivors
Each year in the US, an estimated 70,000 young adults are diagnosed with cancer, and about 1 million young adult survivors are already grappling with issues related to the aftermath of the disease and its treatment.
Research has found that young adult cancer survivors often lack access to professionally led services geared toward the specific emotional issues they face. Psychological support is an essential element of healing and recovery from cancer.
The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura (TWCVV) is a leader in providing support groups to people affected by cancer, and we are extending our quality programs to young adults. Studies show that patients receiving psychosocial support experience less pain, stress and depression, are more likely to comply with medical treatment, experience fewer recurrences, and, in many cases, are able to enjoy a better quality of life and live longer.
We’re excited to announce that we’re expanding our programs to meet the needs of young adults affected by cancer. We currently offer individual counseling to young adults. With your help, we will be able to offer a weekly support group as a key component of our young adult programs. This group will be led by a professional therapist with experience in working with young adults and special training in cancer-related issues. And thanks to you, it will be FREE of charge to young adults who are fighting cancer or who have survived childhood cancer.
