We demand that Duke Energy clean up the coal ash ponds around the Riverbend Coal plant on Mountain Island Lake. These coal ash ponds need to be cleaned up in order to save Mountain Island Lake from further contamination from dirty chemicals such as mercury, lead, selenium, and others.

Coal ash ponds left behind by Duke Energy are polluting the water of
Mountain Island Lake. Coal ash is formed when coal is burned in boilers
that generate steam for power generation. Coal ash pollution contains
high levels of toxic heavy metals such as arsenic, lead, and selenium. Duke energy burned coal at Riverbend for 84 years before closing the plant in April, 2013 due to pressure from residents.
While the plant's closure is welcome news to nearby
residents, Duke Energy has yet to release a comprehensive,
environmentally-friendly plan for disposing of the nearly three million
tons of coal ash that has accumulated over the years. Currently, the
coal ash has been dumped into ponds, which have had several leaks into Mountain Island Lake reported recently.
This water discharge from the ponds has been tested and results show
arsenic levels at about twenty times the EPA limit for safe drinking
These ash ponds are a health hazard to the residents around the retired Riverbend Coal plant and Mountain Island Lake. Duke must clean up the mess they made.
