Dolphin song

We left at night.
In silence
Wielded our way across the sleeping shore.
Said farewell to some who stayed behind.
& took to sea for evermore.

We swam for hours, for days, as far from shore as strength permitted.
We found the uninhabited islands of the sea.
& near them made our nesting places.

We rested on sunlit rocks, seawashed & salty.
Gradually our bodies changed.
The sea surf washed away traces.
Of hair & slowly our colours changed.
To the sea’s own.
We knew, we no longer were beings of Earth.
When the first baby was born.
To us finned.

We are, did you not know, your brothers.
From the same tribe.
But we chose the sea way.
& you
stayed on the shore.
So we grew far apart.
& you forgot us.

But we , like all.
Migrating mammals
never forgot.
so whenever you needed our help & we could reach you.
we came.
Whenever you called us.
We rescued you.

Whenever you listen.
You will be able to hear our song.
For although our songs now are fading.
They are imprinted on your brain.
They are the same songs.
We once sang together.
Each to each.

When will you tune in.
& let
the melody play.
When will you realise.
That I am you.
And you are I.

Let it not be.
When it is far too late.
For both of us.
For our existence is intertwined.
Like earth & sea.
Like dusk & dawn.
