Description

The March of Dimes mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. We carry out this mission through research, community services, education and advocacy to save babies' lives. March of Dimes researchers, volunteers, educators, outreach workers and advocates work together to give all babies a fighting chance against the threats to their health: prematurity, birth defects, low birthweight.

1 in 8 babies is born too soon. You can help by donating now!

MARCH FOR BABIES TODAY
The biggest annual March of Dimes fundraiser, WalkAmerica is now the March for Babies. The name has changed, but the goal remains to same-- to help all babies, those born healthy and those born who need our help to survive. Get started now by visitng www.marchforbabies.org and signing up to participate in your local event! The March for Babies will take place from mid-April to mid-May in most communities in the US. One day all babies will be born healthy, but we have to walk to get there.

I have a set of twin girls who are 23 months old. They were born 1 month premature. I know most are born 2 or 3 months premature. They didn't have to stay in the NICU or anything they were born healthy considering I did have a lot of complications while I was pregnant. They are both now healthy except they have hernia's, asthma and Bronicitas. March of Dimes is a wonderful thing and even though I didn't need them they are many more out there that do... GOD BLESS ALL THE CHILDREN

I was 24 weeks pregnant in 2006 and found myself in the ER with a placenta abruction. I was told that my little girl had died but the doctors on call finally found a weak heartbeat and ordered a c-section. My daughter Madison weighed 1 pound and 8oz and dropped 1 pound 4oz. I was told that night that she had a 50/50% chance to live but the first 48 hours would be the worst. She was on vents,c-paps and oxygen. She stayed in the NICU for a long 109 days and was home for Christmas that year wearing a apena monitor. Madison will turn 3 this August in 2009. And guess what????? She has no problems at all!!! She is on the smaller size as far as weight. And is a little more than normal far sighted for her age but not enough for glasses. And she is all attitude! Thank you,March of Dimes!!!!

Hey everyone. I just wanted to give HOPE to all parents out there of a preemie baby. I was only 23 wks and 6 days when I delivered my daughter, I had her on May 16 2008 and wasnt due till Sept 6 She was only 1 lbs 3 oz they said she wouldnt make it over night to go spend all the time I could with her. I wouldnt give up on her and she didnt give up either, She was on vents for 43 days I couldnt hold her for 45 days and she finally came home after 113 long long days in the nicu and was only on oxygen. She is now 8 months old and is doing wonderfully she is almost 10 n a half lbs and has not had many complications, SO far we do know she has some hearing loss in the right ear but that is so minor compared to anything else. So please just pray and put things in gods hands he will take care of the babies. God bless and I hope this gives you some hope

I have a story that I hope can give parents of preemies hope. I was due to give birth on December 2, 1992 with my third child. My daughters were born full term. On September 16, 1992 I went into labor, i was 29 weeks pregnant, or that's what they told me. So, my son Nicholas was born that night weighing 2 lbs 12 oz, and 14 3/4 inches long. He was transfered to Children's Hospital, Boston NICU. I have never been so scared in my life. He was on a respirator for only 3 days. I felt very lucky, and on that third day i got to hold him for the first time. He was in the hospital for exactly 2 months. So now, he is 16 years old, is about 5' 10" tall and is perfectly healthy. I see him as my miracle child!!! So to all preemie parents, keep hope, keep faith in whatever higher power you believe in. Miracles happen.

My new children's book about prematurity is now available...

A 3-year-old tells the story of her baby sister's 16-week stay in the NICU. The book is filled with full-color photographs of 2 lb. 7 oz. baby Danika, and follows her as she grows bigger, stronger and finally comes home. The book shows children the equipment in the NICU and describes in simple terms what goes on and why. This is a great way to involve your older children in the NICU experience, and help them understand what might be happening to their own premature brother or sister.

Please click my picture to go to my page. I have links to pages where you can purchase this book (Amazon often has it for less than $10).

Blessings to all the families of preemies!! ((HUGS)) Leigh
