Snoop Lion, formerly known as Snoop Dogg, thinks access to healthy food is something every child deserves. After witnessing malnutrition and its effect on children in Jamaica, Snoop Lion is taking action by launching Mind Gardens, a new community gardens project that will provide healthy organic fruits and vegetables to children worldwide.

The mission of Mind Gardens is simple: every child should have access to healthy food. Healthy food nurtures the body and the mind, making access to nutritious food options a crucial part of helping communities to grow and thrive. With this in mind, Snoop Lion and Reed's Ginger Brew have partnered to support Mind Gardens, a nonprofit organization dedicated to building community gardens in impoverished neighborhoods. These organic community gardens will provide children with access to vital nutrients, through fresh fruits and vegetables.

You can help plant the seed of support for the Mind Gardens mission by finding a community garden in your area. Click on the American Community Gardening Association map below:

The first two Mind Gardens locations in the Kingston neighborhoods of Trench town and Tivoli Gardens are the first steps towards the ultimate goal of creating a sustainable method of improving children's nutrition worldwide. Plans are already underway to expand the project to some U.S. neighborhoods.

My most recent trip to Jamaica was informative and rewarding.  I visited the two school sites that will benefit from Mind Gardens' efforts, the National Baptist Primary School and Tivoli Gardens High, and was able to look around the sites where these community gardens will be developed.

I visited National Baptist Primary School on their weekly "Fruit Day", a set day of the week where every student is encouraged to bring a piece of fruit to eat at meal time.  "Fruit Day" is an effort to encourage parents to think about nutritious foods for their children and introduce a healthy diet at a young age.  However, such efforts can only go so far and unfortunately many families are not able to send their children to school daily, let alone with a piece of fresh fruit.  It was sad for me to witness the young children drinking artificial, sugar-loaded sodas and juice boxes rather than the milk or fresh fruit juice many of us enjoyed at school.

The following day I visited Tivoli Gardens High and toured the area where our Teaching Garden will be.  During their lunchtime the school's Principal rounded up some students and took everyone out to the open field where we took multiple photos of the students and site while a soccer game took place on the other side of the field.

Later that day I went to our community garden site in Trench Town where Greenhouse construction will begin this month.  I was educated by our grower on the technical aspects of beginning a community garden, such as the land assessment process that ensures the land is safe and appropriate before any building begins.  This opened my eyes to the extensive work required to develop a project like this - it's definitely not as quick and simple as some may think!  The grower went on to describe the growing process and provided me with a timeline for the actual production of fresh vegetables.  I was inspired by his expansive knowledge and experience with all aspects of the project.

I look forward to returning to Jamaica in the Spring to continue my education and further participate in helping these communities - Tarik Ross.  US Project Coordinator, Mind Gardens.

Thank you for your continued support of Mind Gardens and our mission. Please share the pledge with friends and family

I could not believe what I saw in Jamaica Hi, my name is Tarik Ross, and I'm the U.S. based Project Coordinator for the Mind Gardens Project. For the past 20 years I've been involved in community work in Los Angeles and other cities in the U.S. None of this prepared me for what I witnessed during my trips to Jamaica this past year as I worked to establish Mind Gardens sites in Kingston. Our worst American ghettos don't even compare to the level of poverty I witnessed while in the neighborhoods of Trench Town and Tivoli Gardens.

In Tivoli Gardens I witnessed a girl collecting water from a rusty pipe that appeared to be one of the only sources of water for the entire community. I saw a man bathing in the street from what looked like a large trash can full of water. Working with Snoop on the Mind Gardens Project has truly opened my eyes to the lack of basic necessities, such as clean water and healthy food, in Jamaica. Becoming aware of these living conditions has reinforced my commitment to building Mind Gardens that will provide healthy food options to the children in these communities.

While in Trench Town, I had the opportunity to spend time with the youth who will be directly benefiting from the healthy food we'll harvest from the Mind Gardens sites. Being surrounded by the joyous smiles and playful nature of the children at National Baptist School and TivoliGardens High School almost made me forget about the impoverished neighborhoods that they return to after the last school bell rings.

Yet, through all the hardship, the people of Tivoli Gardens and Trench Town remain resilient and strong-willed. These communities are as excited as we are about the benefits MindGardens will bring to the community. For example, in Tivoli Gardens when we could not locate an existing community garden, we met with the principal of Tivoli Gardens High School who volunteered to work with us to establish a teaching garden that will involve students and parents. In Trench Town we are coordinating with an existing garden that's managed by an experienced gardener. Through your support we are helping to expand the capabilities of his current garden; including the construction of a new 100 square foot greenhouse which will help to increase the gardens food production output.

These communities are ready for Mind Gardens, and they are thankful for your support. With your continued help we'll be able to spread the word about the Mind Gardens Project and expand to neighborhoods throughout the US, and around the world. Thank you for your continued support of Mind Gardens and the communities of Jamaica, Tarik Ross

Congratulations all - we've just blown past 10,000 supporters for Snoop's Mind Gardens Project! The gardens have already been started in two low-income neighborhoods in Kingston, Jamaica. Land is being tilled, seeds are being planted, and soon crops will be harvested!

However, our work is just beginning, and Jamaica is just the start. Next year we want to bring Mind Gardens to the US. Far too many of our children still don't have access to the nourishing foods that are essential for...

However, our work is just beginning, and Jamaica is just the start. Next year we want to bring Mind Gardens to the US. Far too many of our children still don't have access to the nourishing foods that are essential for healthy bodies and minds. To do this we need you; we need your voice.

Please take a moment to appreciate our first milestone, then share the pledge with your friends and family.

Snoop Dogg is connecting with Jamaica. The music star has announced a partnership with Reed's Ginger Brew to aid the Mind Gardens Project, his latest non-profit initiative to create sustainable, organic community gardens. The gardens will provide fresh fruits and vegetables to children in Jamaica.

"When I went to Jamaica, we took time to visit these communities in Kingston, and I was deeply affected by the poverty and lack of good food available to the children," revealed Snoop in a written statement. "No child should go hungry. After all the inspiration Jamaica had provided me, I felt compelled to create a program to give back to the community."

The project has already begun work in Kingston affecting two major communities, Trench Town and Tivoli Gardens. To find out more about the initiative, visit MindGardens.org or Causes.com/MindGardens.

Access to healthy foods should be a right not a privilege. That's exactly why Snoop Lion started the Mind Gardens Project, a nonprofit dedicated to creating community gardens to give kids in impoverished neighborhoods access to healthy fruits and vegetables. Community gardens have been shown to reduce hunger, build communities, provide income, and help the environment. But most importantly, gardens provide nutritious food that nurtures both the body and the mind.

Hmmm...looks like I'm going to have to start a community garden in my area!

If I only had a green thumb. I'm not really sure how to go about doing this. There's not even one in Corpus Christi. I'm going to try to do some talking with the Farmer's Market folks this weekend.

On another note also. my friends family were farmers. I was inspire to do something with this in the area of direct selling to market merchants in usa cutting out the middle man. however I became uninspired to use my injiiniuty for persons who when turn my back robbing me and my things. Finaly I got uninspired to see my friend again.

In 2008 during the campaigns, Change.org was asking people for suggestions to the new President [whomever that might be] for things they should work on in their term. I wrote "Eat Your Lawn" about the need for lawns to be turned into organic food gardens! Lawns are sources of toxic waste that gets into the water systems anyway so why not replace them with homegrown organic food gardens! Happy to see that this movement is growing and the Michelle Obama did plant and grow a garden for the White House too!

How about sending each other your personal messages directly to each other.
Everyone else is talking about Snoop Lion and community gardening projects while you two are blessing us with a conversation about going to a movie and keeping money saved away for a rainy day. It's like you are trying to get robbed or hacked.

I live in Jamaica. I have lived in ghetto. people . what amaze me there was everyone has some kind of small enterprise going on. Jamaicans can be very creative, on other hand also very destructive in manner of which they want to gain. I lived with a person with a yard, where he could plant, and grow fish even and build with little need for money how ever it was impossible to get someone who wanted to make money the easy sleazy way to be inspired t do something innovative. some people just cant be inspired..

hey bro thx for share your love wid the needy childs...in the food starts changing the world.

yup mean wisdom...snoop is delivering good kids to the world

So happy to see this. Was involved in such a program for Los Angeles kids years back. Thank you Snoop.

Terri Herrington

Erna, do you live in LA?

I think this is a great idea,. bring it on.

Snoop Dog is a hood rat. This is a great project but it does not even begin to atone for all the misogyny and violence and uncivilized behavior he has spread through our culture.

Michael Miller

http://www.examiner.com/article/snoop-dog-says-mitt-romney-is-a-white-n-word-vote-for-obama. This is funny and I agree, but is this person really a positive role model or spokesperson?

I work in the University Area of Tampa Florida. The majority of the families in this area are low-income, single parent homes. Our community center has talked about creating a neighborhood garden and We think it is very needed in this neighborhood, but finding funds to support it are hard during these times.
