Stop Coyote Killing Contests in America

To: Secretary of Interior Sally Jewell, Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack (controls all National Forest land)

Coyote Killing Contests are an abomination. They must be outlawed from all federal public lands in the United States!

1. Sally Jewell: Sign an executive order outlawing any killing contests on federal lands in your jurisdiction!

2. Tom Vilsack: Sign an executive order outlawing any killing...

Coyote killing contests are a disgusting, inhumane pastime. The so-called 'hunters' use automated coyote calls, and even raise orphaned (from slaughtered mothers,) coyote pups to kill in their their next contest. They use high-powered rifles with scopes to shoot the unsuspecting coyotes, that respond to the automated calls.

Many 'hunters' purposefully gut-shoot (shoot them in the abdomen,) coyotes, so that they die long, horrible, and painful deaths. This practice is inhumane and reprehensible, and it must stop NOW.

For now, we can do nothing to stop these foul competitions from private land, but your signature will be presented to the Secretaries for action on Federal lands in the United States.

If you, like me, are focused on wilderness and wildlife, it can mentally and emotionally take its toll.  Every week we are subjected to images of animals being snared, killed, by gutless men who in mid-life want a victory, and cannot understand the pain and suffering they create, not just for that wolf or coyote or bear, but for us.  People in what can be called our "global society," endowed with hearts and souls; believing in...

I mention this also because of what I see as a numbing of consciousness. I relate this to the tragedies we have witnessed in 9/11, Tucson, Newtown, and now Boston. You see, each one follows a pattern, something unthinkable, followed by shock, disbelief, heroes, and families in mourning, a desire to make something of the tragedy and a resolve not to let this stop us from enjoying life. The other side of this is that people are becoming more conditioned to this new world, I sense that our ability to be shocked is lessening, that over time people, perhaps like those in the Middle-East and elsewhere where violence, tragedy and the opportunity to ameliorate circumstances have become part of everyday life are settling into a survival pattern which makes life smaller and choices more self-centered.

I bring this up in the context of conservation and the creation of groups that have made senseless killing of predators an accepted part of modern day America.

Sometimes like a fog of the mind, I come back to the Gila Country. When I walked from Mexico to Canada in 1990, I was able to cross a large swath of the Gila Country. It was April; the weather was at times overcast, cold, with a fading winter wind. We had been hiking about three weeks, we were getting strong, the backpacks, like a life saver, straddled our backs. Having started on the Mexican border at Antelope Wells, we had longed to get to our first wilderness, our nation's first.

We walked through small streams, muddy, incrusted with the leaves, flower and grass stems from the past Fall, now wet, slowly marrying with the water, rock and moss of the stream we crossed; oaks in twisted forms, some ponderosa pines rocked in the wind; when combined with the slight trickle of water created the perfect staccato as our day and the miles progressed. That night we slept deep in the forest. Personally, I prefer open land, a tent with a view if you will. We did not set up tents, just our bags, and a simple pad.

    The Reality of Politics

For more than 30 years I have spent time lobbying in Washington, DC for the Arctic Refuge, the Tongass National Forest, Off-Road Vehicle reform, Whales, Wolves, and numerous wilderness areas. The last 13 years in New Mexico, I lead the lobbying charge for the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance, fighting for Otero Mesa, Rio Grande del Norte and the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks.

Washington is both fascinating and amazingly frustrating. Your first visit makes you feel like you are a part of history …and your last, as if politics are completely broken.
In the days and weeks ahead, I would like to candidly profile the President, select US House and Senate members, and even some interesting local representatives across the West.

Part of what makes Bold Visions unique, is that we are not beholden to any elected officials: we view elected officials as servants of the people, working on the people's behalf.

What I have seen in working for conservation is that on both sides of the aisle, there is a lack of respect for wild animals and the natural world. What worked so well following the Wilderness Act of 1964, has been ground down by lobbyists for oil and gas, nuclear, coal and other exploitative industries. It has been trashed largely by Republican and Tea Party members, and to some extent ignored by Democrats. Almost every member of the House and Senate (from both parties) accepts contributions from these questionable industries.

It should not take 15 years to pass a wilderness bill! The large scale killing of wolves is not supported by the American public, so why is it occurring? The answer lies with weak leadership and hero worship by too many in the conservation movement with our elected officials. In the 1940's most Senators had staffs of 3-4. Today, it's more like 25.

We have created a sense of royalty in our elected officials, with their staffs quick to defend their every move.

Some elected officials have been tremendous supporters of wilderness and wildlife, and we will profile their achievements: they deserve our full respect.

Others have fought tooth and nail for industry and special interests. The representatives I want to look at most closely are those that speak and vote correctly--yet show no leadership--and stay silent on issues that define our quality of life in the West.

Stay tuned, we'll be posting this series on our website.

The Alaska Board of Game meets on March 15-19th and will decide whether to accept two proposed predator control programs targeting some of Southeast Alaska's -extremely rare- Alexander Archipelago wolves for the sole purpose of increasing the population of Sitka Black-tailed deer.

The predator programs are based on two studies presented by the Alaska Department of Fish & Game and approved - despite sound scientific opposition. The studies propose the 'EXPERIMENTAL KILLING' of the rare Alexander Archipelago wolves in two Game Management Units - the proposal calls for trappers to kill all of the wolves in one area and 80 percent of the wolves in another.

It is important to express your opposition to these expensive, ill-advised, unscientific predator control programs. Talking points are included in an alert from our colleagues at Alaska Wildlife Alliance
