Engineering

DevOps Engineer

Causes.com is seeking a experienced DevOps engineer that wants an important role in empowering people to come to together and create social change. You’ll dive into infrastructure management, provisioning and automation, as well as all the scalability challenges that come with a rapidly growing, high-traffic site. You won’t be siloed as you collaborate daily with incredibly knowledgeable engineers that plus each other’s ideas and solutions. Neither will your work be isolated to the Internet - what you do will directly support online organization becoming offline action, from influencing votes in Congress to creating new water sources in third-world countries.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborating with software engineers to design a robust, consistent and scalable server infrastructure
  • Developing tools and systems to manage and monitor our production environment
  • Participating in on-call rotation
  • Reporting directly to the VP, Engineering

Ideal candidates will have:

  • 5+ years of experience in operations and/or programming in a Linux environment
  • Deep knowledge of shell scripting, and unix philosophy
  • Deep knowledge of networking  (switches, routers, firewalls, load balancers, etc.)
  • Knowledge of Linux system internals
  • Passion for automated, scalable, and repeatable infrastructure
  • Experience scripting in perl, ruby, or python, or similar
  • Proficiency in SQL (MySQL preferred)
  • Proficiency in various network protocols (SMTP, HTTP, etc)
  • Exceptional communication skills and work well with a team
  • The ability to prioritize tasks and work independently

iOS Developer

Causes.com is searching for an iOS developer that wants their skills to influence the world for good. You’ll be designing and rapidly prototyping our first iOS app to create on-the-go opportunities to help others and contribute to social change. Minds, lives and laws will be affected by your ideas and the ability to implement them.

Responsibilities will include:

  • A major role in designing and building of our first iOS app – this means you’ll be essential in laying down the groundwork, infrastructure and product discussion from start to finish
  • Collaborating with a small team of engineers, designers and key individuals across the company to provide the most empowering user experience possible
  • Communicating your ideas across teams effectively and quickly problem-solving complications as they develop
  • Reporting directly to the VP, Engineering

Ideal candidates will have:

  • 3+ years of experience building iOS apps
  • 3+ years of experience building web apps
  • Built an iOS app currently on sale in Apple's App Store
  • A natural aptitude for both teaching and learning from others in a collaborative team environment
  • Fluency in a *nix development environment

Software Engineer(s)

Causes.com is looking for great software engineers to join our growing team. Design, build and deliver innovative tools that inspire people to create social change from their corner of the world. You’ll give people the ability to support their beliefs, clean up political corruption and provide real-time relief to those in need. Engineers at Causes tend to be jack-of-all-trades, though we love people who have mastered a specific part of the stack, from front-end to back-end and all the data in between.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborating in small teams of 3-5 engineers as well as designers and project managers to rapidly develop compelling new features and maintain existing ones
  • Rapid iteration of these features that keep in mind the user experience
  • Working quickly and efficiently on Rails for a growing user base

Ideal candidates will have:

  • 5+ years of web development experience in a Linux environment
  • Workflow flexibility and strong teamwork skills – we rotate teams every 3-6 months to keep ideas fresh and help engineers discover the parts of the product that interest them most
  • The ability to also work independently, and communicate your work back to the team effectively
  • Proficiency in Rails and Javascript (though our focus is on general talent that can adapt quickly – one of the core Django contributors is on our team)
  • A knack for teaching what you know and learning what you don’t
  • A passion for social activism; we want you to find fulfillment in your work

  • A CS degree, though it’s not mandatory – we’re more interested in your general programming skills

Data Engineer

At Causes, we’re building a platform for social progress – cleaner air, fewer homeless, greater equality, healthier politics – by empowering people and organizations to develop compelling campaigns that quickly gather the support needed to take action. As a Dashboard Engineer, you’ll build the tools for large non-profits, political candidates and grassroots organizers to more effectively create the change they seek.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Identifying and implementing effective Big Data technologies to help solve the biggest problems facing campaigners today
  • Creating beautiful and effective front-end data visualizations that drive campaign insight and understanding
  • Developing and deploying code and infrastructure that collects, stores and processes up to hundreds of millions of events per day
  • Working closely with product managers and designers to gather user feedback on new designs and products
  • Participating in weekly planning and estimation of all new Dashboard user stories
  • Communicating progress, dependencies and issues both within the Dashboard team and across the Causes’ engineering team
  • Creating technical design and architecture specs for Dashboard projects
  • Writing unit tests, participating in code review processes, and ensuring overall quality of shipped code
  • Discovering, evaluating and implementing new tech that keeps the Causes Dashboard innovative and effective

Communications Designer

Causes.com has an opportunity for a skilled communications designer seeking meaningful work. You will tell the story of Causes – both where we are and where we're going – to people, nonprofits and brands. When you succeed, it means more than a job well done – trees are planted, children in Rwanda get bikes and lives are changed forever.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Developing presentations for a variety of audiences, including internal, BD, marketing and nonprofit partners
  • Quickly producing assets for the BD and Impact Partnerships teams, including web ads, marketing collateral, posters, infographics and other materials as neededActing as a liaison between the BD, marketing, and product teams to ensure design consistency between the product and promotional materials
  • Creating original assets for BD campaigns, including backgrounds, email and social media materials, and wrap reports
  • Designing and updating parts of the site that relate to marketing and BD, including causes.com, campaign guides and the blog
  • Producing user flow mocks based on product designs for branded pitches and RFPs
  • Working with the research team to gather and interpret usability feedback on BD campaigns and marketing materials

Marketing Manager

Causes.com is looking for a marketing manager to join our growing marketing team. Your work will expose our community’s achievements to the world, and will be key in inspiring an ever-expanding audience to act on what they care about.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Executing our social media strategy and effectively sharing campaign success stories
  • Executing regular posts on Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and Linkedin platforms to maintain and expand our social audience reach
  • Identifying new platforms to drive brand awareness
  • Reporting on social media efforts and audience growth
  • Collaborating across teams on key marketing priorities such as as branding efforts, product launches and community outreach

Grassroots Organizer

As the world’s largest community for doing good, millions of people come to Causes every month to take action around the issues they care about. We’re looking for a Grassroots Organizer to build and support strong communities around Conservative Societal Benefit and Public Advocacy, helping some of our most active leaders build coalitions and run successful campaigns that focus on individual freedom, limited government, veterans/military, Republican politics and faith-based issues. 

Responsibilities will include: 

  • Building and maintaining deep relationships with conservative leaders and activists 
  • Forming coalitions that bring together like-minded leaders across Causes to share and promote campaigns
  • Personally assisting campaign leaders throughout their entire campaign lifecycle
  • Creating and executing rapid-response campaigns around Conservative Societal Benefit and Public Advocacy issues
  • Distributing great campaigns across Causes through well-maintained communities and our marketing assets
  • Creating press opportunities through mass mobilization and success stories
  • Reporting directing to the Campaigns Director on a daily basis
Ideal candidates will have:
  • A deep knowledge and passion for Conservative Societal Benefit and Public Advocacy issues and the organizational players surrounding it 
  • Extensive experience in grassroots / professional organizing, online and offline
  • A habit of being innovative, adaptive and optimistic in the face of challenges
  • A knack for connecting with people from various backgrounds
