About Ase Academy

An African-Centered Academic and Cultural Enrichment Saturday School Program

Ase Academy is an academic and cultural enrichment Saturday school program in Philadelphia based at the University of Pennsylvania that works with students from grades six through eleven.

Our aim is to empower and encourage our students by engaging them in a number of academic and social areas. We let the students know that contrary to what they are often times led to believe in this society, there is strength, achievement and success in our past, present, and future.

Ase was developed to fill a need for positive cultural and social development for young people in our community. Enrichment programs such as Saturday schools and after-school activities are not new ideas, however Ase brings a new energy through what we have to offer. We have a staff of over thirty multi-talented teachers, coordinators, assistants, and mentors, all understanding the importance of education, and committed to the mission of Ase.

The term "Ase" is of Yoruba origin, and is generally used as a statement of affirmation. It has many applications, including to give thanks or show appreciation or acknowledgment. Most commonly, when people say "Ase" they mean, "Let it be so."

Ase admits students, volunteers and paid-staff of any race, color and nationality or ethnic origin.
