We adopted our daughter when she was 24 months from an orphanage in Ukraine. It was obvious to us that she had many problems and most probably they stemmed from Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. We searched for her birth parents and found that the mother was and still is drinking heavily. There seems to be a huge lack of knowledge in the schools about Fetal Alcohol Affects. We are searching for a school for her (and special needs sister), but there are very few options out there. If we can get her into an Arts Magnet school that will be what saves our daughters. We need schools for the special needs children. The very special needs children are isolated in special rooms (hidden) in schools. They are bullied and are made to feel as though they should disappear. It seems like they are lost and there is no place for them. There is very little support or awareness to help the families that have children with these difficulties in the communities. We have our daughters (both special needs) in a school that does not allow bullying and makes children aware that you accept each other with all our differences. And they do not make fun of you if you spend much of the time in the Resource Room. But finding this school was a miracle and there are not enough of these schools with great principals and teachers out there. Middle School is next year and we are scared.
