Founded in 1973 to support cancer research and public education relating to the prevention, early diagnosis, better treatments and ultimately, a cure for cancer.
Co-founded by Nobel Laureate Albert Szent-Gyorgyi, M.D. in 1973, the NFCR has approached cancer research from the molecular and genetic levels—increasing the likelihood that discoveries in one area of cancer research will lead to new discoveries in another.
NFCR’s approach is to investigate the root causes of cancer in order to understand how to stop it from forming and spreading. Our scientists focus on research areas that hold the most promise in the war against cancer including: chemoprevention, angiogenesis, antibody therapies, genetic mapping, and molecular profiling.
While traditional cancer research organizations encourage scientists to find fragmented improvements in treatments, NFCR funds research that fosters cooperative, multi-disciplinary approaches to discovering the root causes of cancer. Our research approach allows doctors to intervene earlier and save lives.
NFCR is well-recognized by the scientific community for the unique role we play in accelerating cancer research. There are six primary advantages of NFCR funding over other sources:
Seed Funding—NFCR provides seed funding for innovative research that is difficult, if not impossible, to obtain from other sources. NFCR has been the incubator for many of the most important discoveries in cancer research over the past 30 years.
Flexibility—NFCR’s funding is more flexible than other charities, allowing scientists to pursue promising and unanticipated discoveries during the course of their research. This flexibility accelerates the pace at which treatment options for cancer patients can move from the bench to the bedside.
Collaboration—NFCR actively facilitates and fosters collaboration among scientists and serves as a catalyst to accelerate life-saving research.
Global Reach—NFCR is a bridge connecting scientist in their laboratories around the world in the pursuit of a cure for cancer. NFCR overcomes barriers to progress be bringing the best ideas and the best minds together, regardless of location.
Multiple Perspectives—NFCR’s multi-disciplinary approach encourages scientists from different fields to join forces to accelerate the pace of cancer research.
Long-Term Vision—NFCR demonstrates a long-term vision and commitment to cancer research. As a leading cancer charity, NFCR can provide cutting-edge ideas with resources and time to develop.
Looking back at our 35 years of progress, we are proud of how far the anticancer research has advanced as a result of NFCR's efforts. Looking ahead, we are more committed than ever to funding innovative research and accelerating the pace at which new treatment and therapies are brought to the patients who need them most. Even more, we are confident our laboratory research will one day bring us a cure for all types of cancer.
The loyalty of NFCR’s donors has been critical in helping us get pioneering programs into the laboratory. As a non-profit we provide resources like no other organization, but we rely heavily on donations from caring individuals to fund our world-class research.
We hope you will continue your support and allow us to take the next steps in expanding the impact of our unique research.
1. Provide flexible, seed funding for innovative research to pursue promising and unanticipated discoveries during the course of their research.
2. Promote and facilitate collaboration among scientists to accelerate the pace of discovery from bench to bedside.
3. Increase public awareness to help reduce cancer risk.
