It happened in Clearlake, California just last year. My mother passed away in June '12. My brother and I soon found out she changed the will and made her self the trustee administrator. My mother was worth over a Million when she moved there an decade earlier by my sister's insistance. My sister moved there and took over saying our mother's dementia was Alzheimer's disease. Only she was allowed to speak with the doctor and attorney she hired. They were told not to discuss the specifics with my brother and i. All under our noses and we could never believe she would steal the entire estate. She happens to be the Big drug dealer in town as well. All my sister did the entire time is hire tweekers to take care of her and collect money from her drug sales people, and our mother's retirement and ss.
It is disgusting.

So so sad. I was blessed enough to have been able to take care of my mom til her death. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

It happens if we do not take the steps to protect ourselves . Get a living trust try your local bank .
My sister got a living trust for my mother and made her sign it all to her. my mom had dementia and Alzheimers and had no clue. We can't do anything because she holds all the property, money, and investments. My brother and I have nothing from our mom.

I had the privilege of being able to help care for my grandparents when they couldn't care for themselves any longer. My folks, my grandparents, my children and myself all lived under one roof, we shared in the caregiving. Shortly after she moved her there, she moved in with her and convinced her to buy my sister a home, because "I hate you and I can't stand to live with you" in my sister's words. My mother was convinced by my sister I wanted to put her in a nursing home and not to go anywhere with me. However she had Herione and Meth users taking care of her with threats for my brother and me to stay away. A real nightmare!
Afterwards she collected the entire estate, retirement, Social Security (until we reported she was deceased). She doesn't even pay her property taxes and IRS. Unless we come up with thousands for an attorney we can't do anything. She never even filed the living trust with the court or probate, and collected Mom's life insurance of $400,000.
