Malignant Hyperthermia (MH) is an inherited life threatening muscle disorder triggered in susceptible individuals by certain inhaled anesthetics commonly used during general anesthesia given in hospitals, and also in ambulatory surgical centers and office-based surgery suites where surgeries do not require an overnight stay. MH causes an aggressive life-threatening crisis, which can result in serious side effects, brain damage, or death within minutes unless treated appropriately and rapidly.
MH tragedies have devastated families, the careers of medical professionals, and medical facilities alike but it does not have to--- MH emergencies are manageable 95% of the time.
