That Michael Vick ONLY got 23 months is a crime. I didn't expect him to get life or anything, but I think at least a 5 year hit for the things he did & witnessed. At least he got time & prolly won't play for the NFL ever again....I was afraid he would be let off because of his social status.

The best dog I ever had was a pit. We got her because some guy stopped his car in front of our house and pulled her out, took off her collar and drove off. I was about ten at the time and me and my friends (all young kids)called her over and she came running up like it was nothing. She tried to play with us and jump on us but never once tried to hurt us. She had obviously been in multiple fights because part of an ear was missing and her face and neck were covered in scars. We live in Michigan and by law, when you give a pit to a shelter they have to put it down. My mom got her fixed, got all her shots and we kept her. There was no logic to killing such a sweet dog. She never even tried to hurt someone, in fact, you could do anything to that dog and she would just lay there. I don't believe that pits should be put down, even fighting dogs. That dog ran in a pack of other dogs, some ours some friends, and she never once hurt a dog, or started a fight. She was better behaved than all of the dogs I knew at that time, including "more family friendly" dogs like Golden Retrievers and Labs.

I cannot imagine how someone could look into the face of any animal and see those loving eyes and still hurt them. All any creature wants is to be loved and give love, even we as humans want that ... but I wonder who is the real animal here! Don't think it was the dogs myself! Someone needs to increase the laws, fines and time spent in jail for cruelty to animals to the people who abuse these innocent creatures. They only offer love and what do we give them in exchange. Michael Vick you should never come out of jail as far as I am concerned and football is out of the question completely. You made your own bed ... stay there and rot. I hope the guards abuse you like you abused those dogs.

Michelle, I was reading about your experience with the animal shelter, and their reasons for putting pit bulls to sleep, and it just infuriates me to no end. I'm glad that you were able to have positive encounters with this breed, including the one that was being held over for trial. Voices like yours help add to this cause in a big way because people need to know these are not dangerous dogs! NO matter what they were subjected to in the past! Thanks for your comment!

I have always thought that if a person would be that cruel and heartless to an animal, they are capable of treating people the same way. I have read articles recently that say one of the first indicators of a person developing problems with extreme violence, or even becoming a serial killer, is if they are cruel to animals. Even if there are some people out there that don't care for animals much, animal cruelty should be a big concern to them because it's evidence of a pattern of violent behavior. This violent behavior could effect anyone who comes in contact with a person sick enough to torture and hurt animals.
I worked for the Humane Association for awhile a long time ago, and every pit bull, regardless of whether it had been trained to fight or not, had to be euthanized. The Humane Assoc. did that because they considered pit bulls to be a violent breed, and they were also concerned that if they adopted pit bulls out to people, they might fall into the wrong hands and be trained to fight or to be vicious guard dogs. I went to work one day and someone had dumped a mother pit bull and her puppies off overnight. All of them were euthanized that same day. It broke my heart to know small puppies had been euthanized without being given a chance. There was also a pit bull that came in after it was rescued from a fight. He was really beat up, and one of his ears was missing. The owner was charged with animal cruelty so the pitbull had to stay at the Humane Assoc. until the trial was over. He was a really sweet dog, and he never tried to be aggressive with any of us. When I would go into his kennel to feed him he would jump up and put his paws on my shoulders and try to lick my face. He was a really big pit bull. When he stood on his back legs he was face to face with me, but none of us were scared of him because he never gave us any reason to think he would hurt anyone. The case took awhile to go to trial, and when it was over the pit bull was put to sleep. We were all devestated because he was part of the family by that time. We asked the manager why he had to be put to sleep because he had never shown any signs of being a violent dog, and she said it was because when dogs are trained to fight they are given a taste for blood and they are unpredictable. She also said they are trained with certain trigger words, or hand gestures to signal them to fight, and since we didn't know what those words or gestures were, he could be set off at any time by accident. It still seemed so unfair to me.
Those are just a couple of examples of how fighting pit bulls has caused a whole breed of dogs to have such a bad name that they are never given a chance. Some cities even have really strict regulations on breeds they consider to be aggressive. I hope that it doesn't come to the point that pit bulls are banned because some idiots choose to make them vicious, and fight them. The truth is I have met poodles that are more aggressive than most of the pit bulls I have been around, and I think that the reputation that pits have earned is really unjust.

Well he is out and making millions again. Some system we got huh! I can only hope that some big black guy that loves dogs slams him on the football field the way he did those dogs. Why black...because the NAACP who is supporting him would make it be about race if a white guy did it. The NAACP was actually holding a rally for him....a rally for a torturer and slaughterer of dogs. They lost all my respect and will never again be supported by me in any fashion and all of you animal lovers should do the same.
