Wendy,
I wouldn't really go by an IQ test to determine your sons intelligence. It is hard to say how "smart" a person is when they can not speak and answer questions et c. It is my understanding that it is a non verbal test, but I still do not put too much thought in to "their" numbers. Afterall, genius was once considered "madness".

My best friend, has two children with autism. they are two of the sweetest most beautiful children i know. their mother has done a wonderful job raising them, you can feel the love in that household

Staci that is very sad to hear that. It has been very hard for us to get a Developmental Ped to take care of our son because it is all out of pocket cost and insurance will not cover them. Makes me so mad that they try to stab us right in the pocket with the economy the way it is.

Autism Speaks was developed by a couple who's daughter had a son on the Autism Spectrum. Unfortunately, they have regretted making scientists authorities under contract, because none of the research money goes to ANY biomedical interventions; none of the money goes to low income families trying to support ASD; The money goes to brain scans and genetics and these test give these scientist major pocket cash. Autism SPeaks does good things as in it supports awareness but the funding is used irresponsible and they don't have much faith in individuals with Autism...yes they didn't let them make their own decisions..why? Unfortunately it's all about the money...and this organization was not founded to be this way....but it is.

My son has ASD but not are all who have ASD are low functioning. My son even though his IQ is only 63 and he falls in <1% on the Adaptive Behavior scale. He is able to try to cummunicate. While some children cant others can. Each child is different. And I have done a lot of reseach and have seen these children with early intervention group up to have some what of a normal life. So I have confidence with my son having early intervention that he can have a somewhat normal life.

In regards to the Autism Speaks post on 3/9: I work for an agency that is linked with Autism Speaks. To my knowledge many of the autistic people in the agency I work for are quite incapable at the present moment of making any decisions for themselves at all. There are other medical conditions inhibiting them from making any choices regarding their medical treatment, their future, having intimate relationships etc. I do believe that because these amazing people with ASD are so low functioning, that they are not included in important decisions, however, many of their family members are quite closely involved with their everyday life, not just the people who are paid to care for them. The governent is also quite closely involved with their care, not a single organization makes all of the decisions for them, but at least three. Especially in NY, after Willowbrook was exposed, care for autistic persons is constantly under the microscope and teaching independence is a priority. It is also to my understanding that is part of the reason why in many organizations, people who have autism are not directly involved with decision making. I hope this brought some light for you..thanks for being a part of this cause! keep up the good work!

Has anyone heard about this?: If you have please write me back, I would like to assist but I am confused as to what it is.:
"Recently, Lindt Chocolates announced a fundraising campaign for Autism Speaks, an organization that excludes autistic people themselves from its decision-making, uses offensive and unethical advertising tactics based on fear and pity and raises funds for the eugenic elimination of the autism spectrum. This action alert is designed to encourage Lindt Chocolates to aim its support elsewhere, seeing as:
-Autism Speaks is an autism organization that claims to speak for autistic people, without a single autistic person on its board of directors or leadership. This is far out of line with the mainstream of the disability community, where individuals with disabilities work side by side with family members, professionals and others to achieve quality of life and equality of opportunity. Autism Speaks' exclusionary policies are an embarrassment to itself and its funders.
-Autism Speaks advertising is highly offensive to autistic people and our families, with ads that compare a life on the autism spectrum to a car accident, being struck by lightning, a terminal illness and other fatal situations. Rather than work to decrease stigma and increase respect for autistic people, Autism Speaks' advertising fosters pity, shame and fear, suggesting that our very lives are mistakesand burdens.
-Autism Speaks' fundraising goes towards genetic research aimed at developing a prenatal test with potentially eugenic applications. Given the fact that 92% of fetuses that test positive for Down Syndrome are selectively aborted prior to birth, we are concerned by the prospect of a similar result in respect to the autism spectrum. This is an issue of discrimination, wholly separate from typical abortion politics. Money raised in the name of autistic people should go towards opportunities for quality of life, not towards our elimination. Autism Speaks research agenda is overwhelmingly focused on causation and prevention rather than research initiatives that might support quality of life for all autistic people."

My son, who will be 3 next month, was diagnosed with Autism this past October. He recieves Speech, Occupational and Developmental Therapies. We also see a Developmental Psychologist once a week. He will be starting in the special education program here when he turns 3. We are looking into ABA Therapy. Autism is a big part of our life, but it's still a good life : )
