I just learned that The Big Push for Midwives Campaign was not included in the creation of M.A.M.A. Does anyone know why?

I am a member of CfM, and I'm so glad to hear that we have joined the M.A.M.A. (Midwives & Mothers in Action) Campaign for national recognition of CPMs!

I have always wanted to be a direct-entry midwife (CPM) and have been waiting for the laws to change in NC for the past 20 yrs; however, they are still unrecognized by the state. Four out of five of my births were attended by a wonderful & knowledgable CPM. Though I am still hoping & praying for the laws to change, I decided to make a change to help the women where I am at. I just returned from Frontier School of Midwifery & Family Nursing in Hyden, KY. It is very hands-on and the philosophy is very much, "with woman". Only nurse midwives are legally recognized in NC, so I went with Frontier. I am looking forward to my midwifery journey and to helping the women that are placed in my path. Love & Peace...Leah

All of my babies were caught by midwives! My first two sons were born in a free-standing birth center - Special Beginnings! And my third baby was a daughter born at home with Karen Carr, CPM! I would never do it any other way! My favorite labor was with #2 because it wasn't back labor ;) and my favorite birth place/midwife experience was of course at home. My CNM was very good but I loved the approach of my CPM because she was very laid back and hands off and didn't have a protocol of any kind to follow not in pregnancy or labor/birth, so I only asked for care that was necessary and that's all I received! Nothing more. No overtreament/testing, etc... I love midwives!!

P.S. I live in a state which not only does not recognize homebirth or non-nurse midwives, it actually makes it illegal for a non-medical professional (anyone other than a doctor or nurse) to assist at a birth. Back-alley childbirth. Woo hoo. I was on Medicaid at the time, but Medicaid does not reimburse illegal services, so I had to pay out of pocket, and I still owe my midwife. We plan two pay her out of this year's tax refund. Our baby is almost two years old. I wish Medicaid reimbursed homebirth midwives in ALL states...

My first birth was what ICAN would describe as an "unnecessarean." Had a CNM, but she was overruled in the hospital by the chief OB and it was either let him take over or lose her privileges. (I have heard that she has since left that hospital.) Not sure who was more steamed about it, her or me. My second birth was a craptastic hospital VBAC with a supposedly "open-minded" OB. (Hah!) My third birth was a homebirth and the only care I got from start of the pregnancy to finish came from a CPM. Guess which birth was my favourite. Guess which baby was healthiest.
