Feds spent 3.7 times as much in 2011 as 1961 per person: pay bonus for cuts
The Federal government spent 3.7 times as much per person in 2011 as it did 50 years ago in 1961 when Democratic hero JFK was in office (adjusted for inflation). If Kennedy were around to propose his level of spending today he'd be denounced by the mainstream media as a radical extremist. As you'll see on this site: http://www.politicsdebunked.com/article-list/federal-spending spending per capita has on average been steadily increasing for decades no matter who is in office and its expected to rise even faster.
Our government was designed around "checks and balances" that work to control many things, but not apparently not spending. We need to fix that or nothing will ever change. Politicians win office through promising to spend money on favors for special interest groups and the public. There isn't enough incentive for them to restrain spending, especially if they can borrow or find other ways to avoid raising taxes now to cover their handouts.
Perhaps the only way to ever see a balanced budget is to learn from the private sector and introduce "pay for performance".. which includes balancing the budget.. into the political and public sector. More info on that page:
