The Protected Area of Loky Manambato is a gold zone. Gold mining was practiced for years in a regulated way. The distribution of mining license, the gold panning and corridors were well defined. Fanamby strategy is not to completely prevent gold mining because we know that local communities have financial needs. Our strategy is to define operating rules with the support of authorities in order to avoid forests destruction and biodiversity loss. 600 miners are currently located inside the forest of Bekaraoka and threaten the Golden-crowned lemurs(Propithecus Tattersall). Fanamby, within the sustainable development context, put in place economic alternatives for the villagers such as organic agriculture and ecotourism.
