I am greatly encouraged by the launching of a Charter ’08 by academics, artists, farmers and lawyers in China on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Their call for political, legal and constitutional reform is admirable.
I personally believe that President Hu Jintao’s call for a harmonious society is a laudable initiative that can provide space to the viewpoints being expressed by a growing number of Chinese people. A harmonious society can only come into being when there is trust among the people, freedom from fear, freedom of expression, rule of law, justice and equality.
I would like to urge the Chinese leadership to consider making efforts to bring about unity and stability in a civilized way.
I would also like to take this opportunity to call upon the government of the People’s Republic of China to release prisoners of conscience, including Hu Jia, who have been detained for exercising their freedom of expression.

胡佳是一位傑出的人權維護者，他對愛滋病人的關注，更令人動容。本同 盟的主席龍緯汶就曾與胡佳，在電郵中就愛滋病人的議題，交換意見。本同盟驚 聞胡佳被捕，其妻女被軟禁，深表憤怒。本同盟在此要求北京當局，立刻釋放胡 佳，放棄對其的一切指控，以及恢復他一家的人生自由。
本同盟會於稍後修書胡錦濤，要求立刻釋放胡佳。本同盟亦希望全球愛好 民主自由的朋友，一起盡力拯救胡佳。

L’épouse du dissident emprisonné Hu Jia a disparu le 8 août à la veille de l’ouverture des Jeux olympiques de Pékin, se sont inquiétés le 9 août une ONG de défense des Droits de l’Homme et son avocat.
Depuis cette date, toutes les tentatives pour la joindre ont échoué, selon l’organisation "Défenseurs chinois des Droits de l’Homme", craignant qu’elle ait été arrêtée pour éviter tout contact avec la presse étrangère pendant les JO.
Zeng Jinyan, 24 ans, vit en résidence surveillée à Pékin avec son bébé de dix mois. La surveillance policière à son égard s’est intensifiée depuis l’arrestation fin décembre de Hu Jia, l’une des voix les plus critiques du régime, puis sa condamnation en avril pour "tentative de subversion".
"Soit la police est assez incompétente pour la laisser filer sous son nez, soit c’est elle qui est responsable de sa disparition", avance l’ONG.
"Elle a peut-être été emmenée par la police et forcée de quitter Pékin, mais la situation n’est pas très claire", a indiqué son avocat, Li Fangping, contacté par l’AFP.
"D’après ce que je comprends, les autorités ne veulent pas qu’elle soit à Pékin pendant les JO", a-t-il ajouté.
Deux reporters de l’AFP, répondant à une invitation de la jeune femme par e-mail, s’étaient présentés fin juillet à son appartement dans l’est de Pékin, mais des policiers en civil leur avaient bloqué l’accès.
Ces derniers jours, l’AFP a tenté de joindre, sans succès, plusieurs dissidents connus.
"Les autorités contrôlent les gens de différentes manières", souligne M. Li, ajoutant : "Certains avocats, comme moi, sont suivis 24 heures sur 24".
