Chimpanzee Experiments are Cruel and Unnecessary

20,056 signatures

About this Petition:

The U.S. is the only nation that still uses chimpanzees in large-scale research. Many countries have banned research and testing on chimpanzees because of a growing awareness of the scientific problems with these experiments. But the movement to end research on chimpanzees is also based on our knowledge of their rich social and emotional lives—and the suffering caused by life in a laboratory.

Mayoral staffer Jim Bickart tells everyone who will listen, including his office co-workers, that Animal Defense League-Los Angeles (ADL-LA) is a "terrorist" organization. This is factually incorrect. (ADL-LA would argue that it's people like Bickhart and the lazy, nasty, abusive union employees who work inside the Los Angeles Animal Services department who are the REAL terrorists.)

ADL-LA, in fact, follows a long and noble lineage of protest organizations such as those that protested on behalf of women's suffrage, civil rights and gay rights. To ADL-LA the fight to save the lives of our city's homeless and lost animals IS A WAR; it's one of the very few JUST AND NOBLE WARS, and many others in the humane community have joined us over the past six years in our fight for animal justice in the six LA city shelters.

If you are new to Animal Defense League-LA and our campaign to STOP THE KILLING, let us correct, for the record the lies spewing from Bickhart's mouth; he says these things because he realizes how 'impotent' he is regarding LAAS and how incompetent he is in progressive, humane sheltering methods.

ADL-LA is a legal, but militant, protesting/animal rights grass-roots organization. We say "militant" because we are tenacious, passionate and 'in your face'; our motto is "IF IT'S LEGAL WE DO IT," and taking the animals' grievances via loud, angry protests to those who have the ability to help the animals is our spoke in the wheel.

It takes many "SPOKES IN THE WHEEL" to push justice for animals forward, just as it did with other social movements that came before us. ADL-LA's spoke is very important, but so is YOURS. Those of you who are "insiders" and have influence over the Mayor are a very important spoke, those of you who call and e-mail those who we list in our posts that have power and influence to make life better for the animals are an important spoke in the wheel. Rescues, volunteers, etc. are also important spokes in the wheel; we all make it move forward.

Bickhart errantly confuses ADL-LA with anonymous underground cells that engage in illegal sabotage and liberate animals from places of abuse, neglect and death. (We would argue that even those who commit illegal acts to save animals are NOT terrorists; it's the people who are killing innocent animals who are the REAL terrorists.) ADL-LA, fully and completely, ideologically supports these courageous freedom fighters, and would even go as far as to say that history proves THEY are the MOST important spoke in the wheel for any kind of meaningful change. But ADL-LA has a FIREWALL between us and the underground. We don't want to know who they are or what they are doing, unless they choose to send out an anonymous "communiqué" letting the public know the illegal actions they took on behalf of the animals.

ADL-LA is, in fact, very happy with our spoke in the wheel; a spoke that is a legal militant protesting/animal rights organization. So if Bickhart tells you that we are terrorists, realize that he's just an unhappy slob who isn't the 'sharpest tool in the box!'

But we can also tell you that if this city doesn't finally appoint a progressive, humane No Kill General Manager for this new decade, ADL-LA will be out there in FORCE protesting the GM, the commissioners, the Mayor and other individuals who have influence over the Mayor! However, if the city FINALLY appoints a progressive, humane, No-Kill GM, ADL-LA will rally around him/her and the Mayor's office and will do everything in our power to help the new GM and his/her staff get the message out to the public about all the wonderful animals desperately waiting for homes.

Bickhart also tells his co-workers, and anyone else who will listen to him, that "ADL-LA wouldn't be happy with ANY general manager the Mayor's office appoints." That is also factually INCORRECT and is used by Bickhart as a way to excuse his bosses' bad choices for general manager in the past.

All ADL-LA wants and has ever wanted is for the City to hire someone who has the skills and is committed to, implementing lifesaving programs; someone who knows how to utilize creative advertising techniques so we can advertise to the public at large the most important product of all "the wonderful cats, dogs, puppies and kittens" desperately waiting for homes; but under Davis and Barth get killed instead. We also want someone who can bring the kill rate down drastically and the adoption rate up dramatically though the use of the No Kill Equation and the proven programs, polices and protocols that other municipal city shelters and humane society's are already using to great success. We don't think that's too much to ask and we certainly believe the animals deserve someone with that capability, and we KNOW they are out there. We ALL want the same thing; whether you are a rescuer, volunteer, run an animal charity, or simply care about our city's lost and homeless animals, we are ALL united in what we want in a General Manager for LAAS.

AGAIN YOUR task, YOUR 'spoke in the wheel' this week is to contact :
Steven A. Harman-Senior Associate at Citygate
sharman@citygateassociates.com 510-599-5294
and the contacts listed below, and demand Bickhart and Citygate Associates write a "progressive" and not a "regressive" job description for the job of General Manager of LAAS; and that would include individuals who have not necessarily been paid to work in 'animal control' be allowed to apply for the job as well as shelter employees throughout the Nation.
We only have a limited amount of time so let's do this and do this NOW.

Here is the 2nd email from a rescue that was contacted by the Phelps. There is
a strong possibility that they are once again connected with pit bull fighting
rings and are looking for any dogs to sell as bait dogs. It might be wise to go
to surrounding states as well to alert folks (Alabama, etc.).

Again, this email is regarding Casey, Cassie, Katie, Katherine (assumed names)
Phelps and her brother. They may be posing as a married couple.

Please alert transporters as well.

PLEASE FORWARD TO ALL RESCUES IN THE CENTRAL ALABAMA AREA and GEORGIA AREA and
surrounding areas (including Tennessee)
I DON'T KNOW IF THESE PEOPLE ARE RELATED TO THE PHELPS CRIMINALS IN TENNESSEE
(the ones who have killed so many pitties), BUT .....
TRIED TO ADOPT TWO OF MY BULLY BREEDS THIS WEEK, THEY LIVE IN THE BIRMINGHAM
AREA. I GOT AN ANONYMOUS EMAIL SAYING THEY WERE WELL KNOWN DOG ABUSERS. OF
NOTE: THEY REPORT THEY HAVE FIVE CHILDREN AND ARE ADOPTING THE DOGS FOR THEIR
KIDS. THEY HAVE TURNED DOGS IN TO SHELTERS BEFORE FOR "BITING" THEIR KIDS. I
QUESTIONED THEM ABOUT THAT, THEY ARE UNLIKELY TO REPORT IT ON ANOTHER
APPLICATION AGAIN. THEY TOLD ME THEY HAD A CHOCOLATE LAB "STOLEN" FROM THEM
LAST WEEK. ????

DO NOT ADOPT TO THE PHELPS IN BHAM AREA, THEY ARE SUSPICIOUSLY DESPERATE FOR A
DOG....WHEN I TURNED THEM DOWN FOR THE TWO BULLIES, THEY WANTED MY BLACK LAB.
THEY MAY GO OUTSIDE THE BHAM AREA TO TRY TO ADOPT. THEY SEEM ODDLY DESPERATE.=
