My father got dementia in his 50s. It is a terrible disease that robs a person of the his/her identity and dignity. My grandmother also had Alzheimer's Disease, as did my uncle (my father's older brother). It runs in families and early onset is genetic. The Alheimer's Association is the leading privately funded organization researching a cure (and providing education and support in the meantime).
My mom is 61 and has advanced Alzheimers Disease. She is living in an Alzheimers unit and this has almosted destroyed my family. This is a complicated and terrifying disease that is soooo hard to understand.
I am the director of a dementia/Alzheimer unit Until you deal with this everyday you have no idea how devastating this disease really is. They need our help.
My Grandfather had it. And it was really hard to watch him go threw it. R.I.P Robert J. Gibney 2-4-09 :(

My Aunt Gloria, Is probably one of the most loving, vivacious, charismatic warm and charming women you would ever want to meet. Over the last ten years or so life has been extremely difficult for her. Unfortunatley her mother Shirley, had been diagnosed with Alzheimers and she watched her go thru a long slow sad process of losing your memories, family, and then your life. Until shirley ever the graceful kind lady she was made her exit. It seemed after that within about 5 yrs Aunt Gloria would lose 3 very other special people to her. 1st was Jonathan my 23 old cousin, he was basically her baby and I think it broke her heart, Next was her husband Arnold, They were just shy of their 50yrs, and last arnolds mom my grandma who passed at 97. I think all of that loss affected her greatly. Plus life as she knew it was gone..she was alone, she had to sell her house I think a part of her gave up and her brain did too.Her Brother Also has it as well. She went into anassisted living facility that was not adept enough to take care of her needs and I believe I have gotten those things squared away. My advice to anyone in this situation is to talk with someone knowledgeable about the disease, what the tests are for early prevention and if your doctor advises take it.and if it is a parent look for somewhere to put them that has special needs enhanment beds for dementia or locked units. And if you can get tested yourself if it runs down th matriarchal line in your family
In 2008 as the economy slipped into recession, and our sales & marketing agency tanked, My Love, partner, best friend..My Wife, SUZI
slipped into the final stages of Dementia. I will hold her in my arms as long as I can and in my heart forever. I recently found this poem:
"DO NOT ASK ME TO REMEMBER. DON'T TRY TO MAKE ME UNDERSTAND. LET ME REST AND KNOW YOUR WITH ME. KISS MY CHEEK AND HOLD MY HAND. I'M CONFUSED BEYOND YOUR CONCEPT.
I AM SAD AND SICK AND LOST. ALL I KNOW IS THAT I NEED YOU TO BE WITH ME AT ALL COSTS. DO NOT LOSE YOUR PATIENTS WITH ME, DO NOT SCOLD OR CURSE OR CRY. I CAN'T HELP THE WAY I'M ACTING, CAN'T BE DIFFERENT THOUGH I TRY. JUST REMEMBER THAT I NEED YOU. THAT THE BEST OF ME IS GONE. PLEASE DON'T FAIL TO STAND BESIDE ME. LOVE ME TILL MY LIFE IS DONE........ anonymous
