Whales don't need to die! Support Greenpeace to bring a permanent end to whaling! Learn More
Hi Friends! We've all seen the horrific images of whaling. The harpoons. The sea turning red. It's a terrible vision and hopefully it may be a vision we won't have to see much longer! We've just heard a bit of good news out of Japan. A major review of Japanese government spending could spell the end to whaling in the … Read More

The Japanese government is pursuing a political prosecution of two Greenpeace activists, Junichi Sato and Toru Suzuki, who were arrested for exposing corruption in the Japanese whaling program. The government is using the trial to stop investigations into the whaling program and to limit the operations of Greenpeace in Japan. Rather than bow to the pressure of this politically motivated trial, we intend to redirect that pressure on the Japanese government in order to ensure the trial becomes a judgment n whaling and not on our activists.
On May 15th 2008, Greenpeace Japan used undercover investigators and the testimony of informers to expose that large amounts of whale meat were being smuggled from the whaling ship Nisshin Maru disguised as personal baggage. Greenpeace activists Junichi Sato and Toru Suzuki intercepted one box, discovered it contained whale meat and took it to the Tokyo public prosecutor. In a huge success in challenging the legitimacy of Japan's whaling program, Greenpeace drew national attention in Japan, and a promise y the public prosecutor to "fully investigate" the charges. But instead, Junich Sato and Toru were arrested for stealing the box of whale meat, and the scandal investigation was dropped on the very same day; it was clear that the two events were connected and politically motivated. Although Junichi and Toru had provided full cooperation to the police, it took five weeks to make the arrests, and when they did, more than 40 officers raided the Greenpeace Japan office, with the media tipped off by police befrehand. They are now facing up to ten years in jail.
We have to let the government of Japan know that it's time that Japan stop pursuing these peaceful activists and go after the real criminals, the whalers.
