The Non-governmental-Organization in Bolgatanga, Ghana, the "Widows and Orphans Movement"(WOM)
We support the NGO since more than a year, helping them with technical know how, logistics and acquiring plant and machinery for their facility.
Widows and Orphans is primarily engaged in the support of those women who have been displaced as a result of their refusal to accept their brother-in-law as a husband.
When you hear the heart throbbing stories of those who have been subjected to intimidation and violence, you cannot but feel remorse for these women and children.
The deep rooted traditions in their society demand that if the husband dies, his possession including his wife and children will be the "property" of the brother in law.
This in real terms means , the widow is subjected to (in most cases immediate) intimidation, domestic violence and sexual exploitation.
The government is trying to stop this practice, but due to the remote areas these cases happen sometimes, it is difficult to have a law implemented.
If the widow refuses (and it happens in many cases, understandably) she is being expelled, without anything except her cloth on her bare back.
Children and widow are being literally thrown on the dust roads.
The noble aim of this organization is to help those women and children, and give them a place, food and shelter, and provides them land where they can farm peanuts.
We are helping them to acquire machinery to improve their self sufficiency, to extract oil and sell it on the market, to achieve sustainable income and growth.
Compassion is our goal - providing help for the needy our prime task.
