Stas Pryakhin is 27 years old. He is a student at St. Petersburg State University of Culture and Arts, majoring in film and photography. In August 2009, Stas was hospitalized due to severe pain in his bones. The tests revealed he had acute lymphoblastic leukemia with Philadelphia chromosome breakage. Stas had barely begun treatment, when sudden development of meningitis sent him to intensive care unit. The doctors were pessimistic about his chances, but Stas survived. He got out of intensive care and resumed therapy, which was interrupted two more times due to blood infections. In January 2010, Stas was discharged for a short time to take college tests, and soon afterwards he returned to the hospital for high-dosage chemotherapy. When the therapy is completed, Stas is recommended to undergo bone marrow transplantation. The cost of procedure is 15,000 euros and it is scheduled for July-August 2010. Stas was born in St. Petersburg and was raised by his mom. Ever since Stas was a little kid, he has always been around the animals. His mother worked at the St. Petersburg Zoo and Stas spent a lot of time there close to his mom. As a young boy, he started collecting spiders and his collection now includes some exotic species. It was only natural that Stas has chosen his first career in the same field: animal science.
But passion for animals was not his only one. Later, Stas developed a calling for art and photography. He worked as a wedding photographer and assistant cameraman. Together with a friend, Stas has organized a small photo and video production studio, a project that had to be put on hold after he got sick.
Stas also enjoyed being at the opposite side of the camera. He starred in the videos of rock bands, played small roles in the movies such as "Master and Margarita" and "The Streets of Broken Lamps" TV series, and even had a role of Peter the Great on Discovery Channel.
As an artist, Stas strives to learn from Salvador Dali and Picasso, and in literature, he prefers Ray Bradbury and Lewis Carroll.
Friends describe Stas as a modest and humble person. He is very thoughtful and attentive to others' needs. His friends often find comfort in talking to him and cherish him deeply for his kindness. Despite the disease, Stas has not lost his faith in people and truly believes that even such a terrible disease as leukemia can be beaten!
