"As so Above and Below"
The Process
It is important to bring everyone into the project with an understanding of the stages that Alvin will go, from his initial sketches to the final unveiling.
Stage 1: Concepting & Design - Alvin is coming to the end of this stage, having brought this idea to life in the form of scaled "maquettes", or mini-sculptures, to work out the basic form, balance and essence of the sculpture. This initial stage also saw Alvin introducing the sculpture to the community at the Kickapoo Earthday Celebration of 2010. The community continues to be excited with follow-up articles, presentations, and radio spots, generating wider interest and "buzz", including this Cause Page. To collect funds, the idea of the Kickapoo Community Art Fund was born and is now excepting donations directly or though this Facebook Cause page. Patronage and grants are also being sought.
Stage 2: Blocking - Alvin is now moving into the blocking phase which is breaking the sculpture down into workable slabs for rough block assembly of the white oak. This stage is crucial in determining the scale and magnitude of the sculpture and calculating the amount of rough material needed to get started. Quality reclaimed white oak is being sourced and bids are being sought to perform the mill and glue-up of the rough block. This stage will also include stage photos, some of which can be seen here, as well as a press release and public presentation to update and raise more funds. The projected cost of this stage is $15,000.
Stage 3: Roughing-out & "Wasting" - With power tools and hand tools rough cutting is performed to locate the basic contours of the forms within the block. At this stage a base will be created to work from and to allow for transport for public demonstrations in and around the Kickapoo. More fundraising with public presentations and special guests. The projected cost of this stage is $5,000
Stage 4: Refining - Power and hand tooling to refine forms to their most expressive contours, highlights and shadows, and aesthetic subtleties. Experiment and research of potential finishes. More public demonstrations, with a highlight presentation at the Driftless Area Art Festival Soldiers Grove, in September. Refinement will proceed through the winter in an unhurried, meditative state of mind, in the prayerful attitude the sculpture embodies. The dialogue and participation with the "community" will deepen until the target day of unveiling, Earth Day, 2011.
The projected cost of this stage is $15,000
Stage 5: Site Procurement - Exploration of potential permanent sites and the procurement of final site for permanent installation, chosen by committee including the artist, with a stated protocol and shared priorities. After site it secured, a permanent base will be created and necessary landscaping performed on-site. During this period, the final sculpture will be sited prominently along highway 131 at Alvin's studio, in view of North Crawford School.

Installation of the final sculpture which includes landscaping, a public unveiling with great pomp and ceremony, including a ritual element involving the community, fire, and prayers of intention. All to happen sometime in the Summer, 2011. The projected cost of this stage is $15,000
