I have referred to people from the "old country", as my mamagrande used to refer to Europe, as Europeans. Many relatives and friends live in different countries of Europe and I can't keep them all straight, even when I was younger. Mamagrande was from Luxembourg which is tiny and surrounded by quite a few other countries that it was easier for us, (and they did too) to just say European and they did not think anything of it. Maybe they had and have thicker skin or have better things on their mind than some who write on this CAUSA who seem to be such sanctimonious, fumy, anal, querulous dolts who have taken "politically correct" to the extreme.
I joined not because I don't like the US or its people. I've been there, met a whole bunch of people, my whole family lives there, BUT the when refering to a United States citizen as American is just like refering to a German citizen as European.
Point being, it is a lack of personality I feel from them not having a word to specifcly describe their nationality and projecting a global image of the word that is not quite correct.
Maria....I have been posting comments on this cause for a while now. So what you originally read from me was a reaction to the stuipidity of some who attack. For example, the moron who posted the you tube link. Please....cut me a break we have over 300 million people in the U.S. and using a few examples to make a point is pointless. You see regardless of all the bitching and complaining nothing is going to change. I bet those U.S. citizens who created facebook also refer to themselves as Americans. Your point has been made and is understood. So I guess what are you all concerned with beyond our borders? Is our foreign policy an issue for you?
Am going out the cause again so forgive me all for the detour
Rene
I would like to clarify to you that I didn’t have any bad experience or mistreatment while living in USA. What I tried to say was that living in several American countries, including US, helped me have a broader view and better understanding of past and present issues and situations that have affected the whole continent, so when I saw this cause I adhered immediately and not because I abhor the United States but because I deeply care about the land that starts up in Canada and ends deep down in Patagonia -including Las Islas Malvinas-.
I think you have it all wrong…people is the least interested on Usonian identity, what drives people to enlist to this cause is the fact that they have been stripped off theirs if you know what I mean, and don’t be as arrogant as to think we worry about what Usonians do within their country …no! …is all the way around! we all worry about what US does beyond its borders.
You complain about people using this space to insult the Usonians ? Is true, but don’t expect kind words from the fallen, the humiliated and desecrated. You yourself started off insulting many of the cause members.
Peace comes to the truly humble of heart and spirit.
My thoughts (a list)
1. I am from the United States
2. I speak English, Spanish, and French.
3. I am not ignorant about the world around. I can locate most countries on the map.
3. I can name all the countries in North and South America including their capitals including most of the presidents (i.e. Uribe-Colombia, Correa-Ecuador, Kirchner-Argentina, Silva-Brazil, etc).
4. I have lived and traveled for years outside the US.
5. I have met plenty of stupid, ignorant, uninformed people all over the world.
6. I do not believe that the US is somehow superior to other countries.
7. In Spanish I refer to myself as estadounidense but in English I call myself American and will continue to do so.
8. This has nothing to with arrogance or ignorance on my part--this is simply the word that's is used and I see no pressing reason to change it.
Simply put: If you have a problem with US foreign policy (which I do) or US economic policy (which I do also) go work on that! Stop wasting time on a pointless argument that won't change anything!
It depends on who you refer to. I do not deny that all on this continent (North and South America) are Americans. I've never denied that. Not even are own government denies this. When I go to Mexico and come back across the border into the U.S. they never ask me if I'm an American citizen. They ask, always, if I'm a U.S. citizen or if I'm a citizen of the United States. In the United States we don't have national identification cards however we do have identification cards identifying us with our state in which we reside. For example, my identification card says Texas. Many of us identify ourselves with our states and with our past. In Boston many refer to themselves as Irish or Italian. Where I live many still refer to themselves as Mexican or Tejanos. People here still identify themselves with their past homeland. In florida, Cubans still refer to themselves as such and the mixture of cultures makes the United States what it is. So understand that we have no identity crisis. Even though my family came from Mexico I prefer living here. Texas' economy is tied to Mexico's success and we make excellent trading partners. Our economies are tied in with one another. A sucessful Mexico is good for Texas. so again I say to you that many of us identify and call ourselves by our state names. What the people of Ohio and Penn. do does not reflect on what Texas does. We are a bunch of states, 50 to be exact, who identify with our own culture and history and happen to take up a large portion of America. I guess my question to you and others is why do you all concern yourself with our identity in the United States? Many of you dwell and harp with insults against us. It makes me fell bad for you all because it sounds like you all have nothing better to do but cry like babies. Personally, I laugh at you all not because I think I'm better but because I fell sorry for people who have nothing better to do with their lives but complain. While many of you all concern yourself about our name, many of us in the United States are wondering when the weekend will arrive so we can get plastered with Tequila. So I say to you and others don't worry about us. For us life goes on as should yours. I'm concerned about my move to Houston and my trip to Spain and Italy in the summer. Who knows, maybe I might attempt to fit a few days in Portugal. Any recommendations? PEACE!!!
Thanks for your explanation but I lived-studied for many years in USA (Ohio-Pennsylvania) so I know its history and how the country is politically constituted, but I also lived in several other American countries and is precisely my knowledge and my experiece there that made me adhere to this cause. No one in his right mind can deny all born in this big continent is American like the Usonians are.
Is a fact that the United States do not have a eponym and I myself always refer their nationals as Usonias, UnitedStatian or EstadoUnidense.
Rene, My "Causa" page has a full face foto of Maria.....se parece bonita! My foto is about ten years old, about two years after a full facelift....that is why my eyebrows are so high! I always look happy and surprised. 8>)
OF COURSE, the food Channel, mi favorito !
Oh by the way Maria, you still do not have a profile picture. Your picture is what facebook provides you when you don't have a picture. Mine is still there. In fact, everybodys picture is there except yours. Don't know why.
Maria, Maria...I originally became a member of this group to read and observer what others thought of people of the United States. There is a major misconception about this country. Many on this site believe that all U.S. citizens think alike. That is incorrect. We are a diverse group of people from all over the world. In essence, we are a nation of immigrants, some having been here several generations longer than others. But to truly understand this country, you must view it through various perspectives. To understand our government and the policies that our created you must look how it is structured. We are a country united by states, each state having its own distinct history. I live in Corpus Christi, Texas. It is about 150 miles away from Mexico. I'm not ashamed to be a descendant from Mexico. Here in our country our Constitution dictates the rules that we live by. 50 states creating a union. That is why we are called the United States. In Texas we create our own laws and when it might conflict with federal laws we look to the U.S. Constitution to resolve the issue. We are a United States of America. However, many of us refer to ourselves by our state name. For example, since I'm from Texas we refer to ourselves as Texans or Texanos. The ignorance displayed on this cause about U.S. citizens is completely false. Again in this country we agree to disagree and our politics vary. Sometimes we are on the winning and losing side.
http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guerra_d...
http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guerra_d...
Podriamos aprender a aprender algun dia...?
Rene,
As I said previously you don't know a thing about Geopolitics...Portugal is in Europe and Venezuela is in America...and you can put together the letters but you don't know how to read them.
All your posts are filled with hatred so I recommend you rage control Rehab and if you're ashamed to be a Mexican or a descendant get therapy!
Aaahh! The only missing profile pic is yours. I changed mine to a new full faced one so you can see me better
Yes am from Portugal and have lots of family members disseminated throughout the world.
So whenever you see a Coelho you can bet there is a Portuguese somewhere there. ;-)
I have family throughout America, as in Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, Canada and USA but I also lived in many of those countries including the USA.
Here in Europe many deeply regret United States arrogant behavior …. We don’t need go too far to see here in this cause some posts as examples
The picture I posted is an example of how we see USA “help” to Haitian people; this was taken from a Spanish journal and not made by me as some malditos think.
We, here in Europe, know why Haiti ended up worse that it should have because we do have alternative news channels.
Tambien en Boston, Massachusetts, tienen colonias grandes de Portuguesos y hace unos anos un senor com apellido como el tuyo .......ran for president of the U.S. did not make it and several years later died of cancer. This has nothing to do with the cause, but thought it was interesting. Sometimes my old brain forgets spanish words or phrases....am not trying to be "pocha".
Help ! SOCORRO ! !
I also noticed that your profile pictures have disappeared. Only mine and Alice's photo remains. You obviously can talk the talk but when all is said and done, you anti-U.S. people are nothing more than a bunch of cowards. If any one of your countries went to war with the United States you'd get knocked out in less than a month.
You are from Venezuela. The poster you posted titled pobre haiti was an attack on my country. Rather live in the U.S. than your lousy country. I'm tired of being nice with you people. Let the battle begin chica.
Rene.
mi apellido no te dice algo ?
