Under the current Kyoto Protocol and its main mechanisms*, nuclear energy is rightly excluded from the possible solutions available to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. At the Copenhagen summit, nuclear power will be at the heart of the negotiations. In collaboration with certain countries, the nuclear industry is pushing for this dangerous and polluting technology to be included in the next climate agreement as a “clean” technology.
This would allow some industrialised countries to avoid reducing part of the emissions produced on their territory, without questioning the way they produce and consume, whilst exporting an expensive, inefficient and risky technology. Such a disingenuous strategy would encourage the global expansion of the nuclear industry, with its associated risks, and would mean losing the fight against climate change.
Join us in challenging the political leaders gathered in Copenhagen: Nuclear energy must not be used as a tool to fight climate change and be given the advantage of large public investments... at the expense of the real solutions!
