This is one of the reasons that the Greens have to be more proactive,
Doing deals with either/or the major parties will not effect change.
NO PREFERENCES
You can decide the future of the Mary River!
The election this Saturday is critical for the future of the Mary River! For almost three years the diverse group that is Save the Mary has worked tirelessly to, one way or another, make the government axe its plans to build the controversial Traveston Crossing dam. There's been wonderful support from all directions, and many small wins along the way.
The state government repeatedly said they’d only build it if it stacked up environmentally. Federal reports show that it doesn’t, but the state government still refuses to back away from it.
This leaves no option but to SEND A VERY CLEAR NO DAM MESSAGE WHEN YOU VOTE ON SATURDAY. Your vote can decide the future of this vital river, and stop the proposed dam.
Just last week, the Greens, who have long expressed opposition to the dam, made a preference deal with Labor to suggest preferences in 14 key marginal seats. The result of this is that the preference selections of Greens voters could very well decide the outcome of the election, and thus the future of the Mary River.
The message we need to get out to all Green voters is simple... While preferences may be suggested by the Greens party on a how to vote card, they are not counted that way in the tally room. The choice of how to number preferences is yours alone! If you don’t mark a preference and just “Vote One” then no preferences flow from your vote. TO GIVE A SECOND PREFERENCE TO LABOR IS TO SEAL THE FATE OF THE MARY RIVER AND GREAT SANDY STRAIT.
If you live in one of these 14 marginal seats, this message is of vital importance to you:
Ashgrove Aspley Barron River Broadwater Cleveland Everton Greenslopes Mansfield Gaven Pumicestone Redcliffe Redlands Southport Whitsunday.
If you do wish to allocate preferences, the LNP has maintained its commitment to stop the dam, as have many independent candidates.
As you vote, remember that the fate of the Mary River is, quite literally, in your hands. PLEASE VOTE WISELY AND VOTE FOR NO DAM.
And feel free to pass this email on, it seems many are still confused by both the Greens preference suggestions AND the optional preferential voting system used in this election.
Cheers,
Arkin

activism in pictures... to save the Mary River!
Here's a clarification after today's announcement by the Greens that they will preference Labor in 14 seats...
A vote for Labor is a vote to build Traveston Dam. A Green vote with a preference directed to Labor is a vote to build Traveston Dam. In a desperate attempt to hold his seat of Indooroopilly, Ronan Lee made a deal with Anna Bligh. That does not mean that Green voters have to make the same deal. Vote with your conscience, don't preference Labor, & help save the Mary River.
Remember, it's YOUR VOTE! You can put the numbers in any order that YOU want. A How To Vote card is simply a suggestion by a party for the outcome they want... it's ENTIRELY UP TO YOU to choose the order you'll follow, & how many numbers you'll go to.
If you want your vote to help save the Mary River & stop Traveston Dam you can vote 1, 2 & 3 for Greens, NLP, or most independants (ask their position on the dam first).
Think carefully about what your preferences get up to in the tally room!
State Election March 21!
This is a critical time in our battle. There will not be another chance like the next 3 weeks. The state economy has plummeted to the point where TCD is even more on the nose. The $570m already spent accounts for almost 40% of the state deficit. To proceed would be reckless, both for the environment AND the economy.
We ask everyone who has ever signed a petition, written a letter, attended a rally or opposed the dam in any way to help us get the word even more into Brisbane and particularly into marginal seats.
We've won this on environment and economics, now we have to win it on politics.

I've been reading Adele Coombs' book 'a love letter from the Mary River' and I'm wholeheartedly in support of stopping this dam from going ahead, it was decided upon for pure political reasons instead of any good scientific ones and needs to be stopped
What a great day we had yesterday delivering presents to Cptn Bligh in Brisbane. Thanks to everyone who attended and dressed up and played like children again. It is nice to have some light heartness with you all. Keep going scratch at the wound. Have Mary Merry Xmas and a DAM FREE New Year. Lucky me will spend both on this beautiful river camping and enjoying her gifts. GO 2009

something I wrote on my journey, dedicated to the grumpy ol bugger Vic, who left us to flow from the rivers to the sea on the day this was written. May mother nature hold you gently in her arms.
I sat by the murray river today and cried and cried and cried,
to look at this beautiful country of ours and how we have made it die.
No trees to be seen, just dirt, dust and flies.
I worry our Mary what will happen to you,
If we allow this stupid dam to go through.
Looking at this I see reflections of the future,
when really what we need to do is nurture.
I know you fail to keep up the pace,
and in ding so many will become the dying race.
I will fight for you until the bitter end,
cause darlin Mary you are one of mother natures best friends.
I am willing to give my life for you,
cause if they dam you our future is damned too.

Yea ha what an awesome reception from the people at the Tamanians against the Pulp Mill ( www.taqpvision.com) last night. These guys loved Mary to life, signing heaps of letters, purchasing heaps of book and offering loads of support. They loved the stubbie coolers and bikini. We have their support and have been invited back in march. We need to support these guys as much as we can, because if this happens to them it would be as bad for all of Tasmania as Daming Mary would be. Much love Victoria

The Barleyshakes have written a song called "Dear Anna I love Mary" - they invited people to write verses for the song and have posted the most recent version of it on their MySpace site: http://www.myspace.com/barleyshakes

This is at least a start to scrapping this rediculous plan.
I just feel sorry for those families that have already sold and left their properties.

Updates would be nice!? what was the outcome?
